Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

OS Lion keeps randomly crashing. Anyone else?

This is becoming very frustrating now. I keep getting a black screen and have to hard boot (Hold the Power Button) down to get my Mac up and running. This has happened more than 10-15 times since installing. I thought that it was happening only when I was using Safari, but it happens in Office, Apple Mail, iCal, and Finder as well. I am using an early 2011 MacBook Pro. Someone please give me some assistance? I see nothing on Apple's Support site, other than many, many other users reporting the same issue.

P.S. I completely uninstalled Flash to see if that was the problem. Nope, still happens.

Thank you in advance.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 15' AMD Radeon HD 6750M, 8GB

I am glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem. Early 2011 17" MBP was running Snow Leopard like a dream. I upgraded to Lion over Snow Leopard and within a day was experiencing random freezes which I couldn't pinpoint to any one application and could remedy only by a hard shutdown. This became more frequent so I copied all my files to an external, wiped the drive and performed a clean install of Lion then copied my files back across. First thing I did was update iTunes which resulted in a freeze and hard shutdown. After a restart Lion was running nice. I installed a few apps, Office, Skype etc and everything seemed fine until the next day when the machine started freezing again......a lot. Sometimes after a hard shutdown the MBP wouldn't reboot into Lion and I would just see the grey screen so would power off again then it would boot up. Tried repairing permissions and Disk Utility was telling me that the disk was corrupt and after repairing the machine would reboot ok but Disk Utility would again show a corrupt disk. Finally Lion would not so much as allow me past the sign in screen - after entering my password the screen went grey then the sign in screen would appear again.

Called Apple Support and was on with them for maybe an hour with no resolution. Finally I wiped the drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard from the CD and since then the MBP is again running flawlessly.

Really frustrating as I like a lot of the features of Lion but am now afraid to do another upgrade....

Aug 7, 2011 3:12 PM in response to rarley

Same problem as rarley. After unchecking "Automatic Graphics Switching (AGS)" in energy saver, computer crashed (Lion) when opening Mail. After a hard reboot, I found (AGS) again set to Automatic Switching, so I unchecked it again and locked the screen. So far so good, but I'm not optimistic. This ought to be a high priority item for Apple. Mac Pro has no such problems. Go figure. Like you random crashes.

Aug 8, 2011 2:29 AM in response to MacMoore

@MacMoore:

Tried that to no avail. A real puzzler. I have to use my machine every day for work so I guess the only option for me is to stick with 10.6.8 until I read of some updates / patches......

The most frustrating thing is that this is my first Mac and it's looking as if they are not as reliable as they are cracked up to be........

I'm using MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2010 model). To the moment I have upgraded it to Lion it worked (almost) perfectly. After an upgrade to Lion, it started to freeze randomly, I just cannot identify the reason, nor simulate the situation as it always comes just out of blue. Today I did a 10.7.2 update of Lion in hope for improvement. I was too optimistic. The same happens again. I'd wonder if anyone in Apple takes care? I haven'tfound any official support statement to that.

Oct 27, 2011 12:30 PM in response to bartonb

I am seing the same thing on my system, but for me this only happens on a specific WiFi network. It only happens at my university's network.

Furthermore I spoke with 4 other students, all with new macbook pro's and lion installed, they had the same problem, but it happend on all computers more or less simultaneously.

Have you seen a connection between the network and crashing?

Oct 28, 2011 9:29 AM in response to bartonb

As other users reported and suggested, this problem occurs by a serious bug of NVIDIA driver. Recently, Apple released updates for this blackout freeze bug of MacBook Pro, but nothing has been changed. You can know NVIDIA has not supported MacOSX 10.7 yet in the download page of their official site.

Solutions reported in the net are,

1. Do not use discreet grachic (NVIDIA) by using a software "gfxCardStatus".

2. Do not let your computer sleep (set "Never" in Energy Saver preference)

3. Delete .plists files which includes the word "windowserver" in "~/Library/Preferences/ByHost", then reboot.

If you use secondary display as dual display or as closed lid mode, you can't choose solution 1.

Anyway, you had better uncheck automatic graphic switch, or force it set as discreet by gfxCardStatus.

Nov 15, 2011 9:45 AM in response to bartonb

This still keeps happening with me. Even with 10.7.2. Really frustrating. I hope they fix it soon with 10.7.3. Happens randomly in all sorts of programms, but espeically Safari and Outlook. ONly seems to happen on my Imac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. Doesn't seem to happen on 2.4 GHz Core Duo, or on my minimac. I'm running Lion on all three.

Nov 15, 2011 10:17 AM in response to looenow

When I first installed Lion I was amazed at how it seemed exactly the same as Snow Leopard but with various features no longer available, made a mess of, or far uglier than they were (e.g. the horrible login screen).

Colleagues were asking me "should I install Lion? How is it?" and I said "Exactly the same as Snow Leopard, but with a whole set of new things that don't work or that add nothing to the user experience."

So I kept on with it for about a month, and during that period I discovered that I was gradually getting an increasing number of freezes and endless beachballing for no discernible reason, requiring hard reboots with alarming frequency.

It seemed to me that over time, there are conflicts somewhere deep in the system that build up over time, leading gradually to a computer that becomes unusable for any serious work-related purpose.

So with a bit of effort, using the clone I had made of Snow before adopting Lion, I parked Lion on another computer and now I only fire it up once in a while to remind myself how much it ****s as compared to Snow.

What drove me back to Snow was the constant beachballing plus the 30 other things (I've listed them for myself) that will have to be fixed before I adopt Lion.

I'm quite an experienced long-time Mac user but I can't offer any fix for all these freezes/crashes that are being reported. I never thought I would get to the point where I would ever go BACK with the MacOS. But here I am.

I dunno - maybe Lion only works on new Macs that have their hardware written for Lion. I've been running it on a 2009 MacBook Pro.

OS Lion keeps randomly crashing. Anyone else?
