Lion mail To Do?

Did Apple do away with To Do in Lion Mail? I can't find it and I rely on it!

Like others, I am completely unimpressed with how Apple have 'dumbed down' Mail and iCal in order to chase the iPad look. I have a desktop Mac - not an iPad, and some stuff just does not translate so good between platforms (that hobbled waste of resources LaunchPad being the prime example).

ToDo in Mail was primitive but I perservered because I wanted to use an integrated solution, I got excited when I saw 'Reminders' in the keynote because I thought that I would be able to shed more third party apps for an integrated solution - I am extremely disappointed that the opposite is the case. Add on the fact that I have just discovered to my horror that I have the Lion Mail "email stuck in the outbox" issue that many others are reporting and have 40 emails that have not gone - affecting my personal and business life - and I missed that because of the hobbled Mail 'view' imposed on us, I am now giving serious consideration to ditching Apple Mail, iCal and Address book.

In answer to the OP, you could always create an AppleScript or Automator workflow (and save it as a service) to do the inelegant workaround - I do that for all the menial stuff and it makes life so much easier.

I too have a desktop, hey, I actually make a living with mine not play with it. It disturbs me, the trend in where Apple is taking their computers. 99% of my business is via email and I need a ToDo/Reminder in email so that I can keep it all in one place. I don't use iCal as much and it may force me to rethink my workflow, which ticks me off because Apple wants to play pretty instead of functional production.

Thanks to you all for your replies. I have yet to find a solution I am testing a few out. I am not familiar with AppleScripts or Automator, I am a designer, and it looks like I will have to learn a new thing or two to get back to where I want to me. I feel demoted!

IMHO, it is a clear case of an infringment of our consumers rights by Apple Inc.

First, it is clearly a downgrade - an immoprtant feature or funcionallity missing.

Second, that particular functionality was well advertised by Apple for the previous versions of the OS and the Mail.app.

Third, Mac OS 10.7 Lion was advertised as an upgrade, i.e. many additional functionality on top of the features in 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Finaly, Apple did not warned, announced and in any other way notified us before lure us on paying money for the so-called 'upgrade' of 10.7 Lion.

I'll wait for the first updat of Lion (10.7.1) and if the feature is still missing, I'll start getting support for a class action.

Just to be clear here, since I do not have access to a machine running Lion -- have To Dos been COMPLETELY removed from Mail? I understand that apparently they're gone from the "REMINDERS" section, but what about To-Dos that were created within individual messages by selecting text? This is my usual workflow -- my boss sends me an email with the day's tasks written as a list, and I then create To-Do items for each one by selecting a line and then either pressing Cmd+Opt+Y or using the File->New To Do menu item. Is this functionality gone as well? What happens to existing To-Dos that had been created this way in Snow Leopard? What of the "Apple Mail To Do" mailboxes that were created in IMAP accounts in 10.5 and 10.6? How does 10.7 deal with them?

I have found (using Exchange though) an iPhone app that does sync the "Reminders" in LION along with the iPad/iPhone. iMExchange2 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imexchange-2/id390716055?mt=8 (not the first one) is the app.

I have tested with Exchange, and it works fine. If not on Exchange, good luck. I have spent so much time trying to find a simple, easy solution to managing sync across tasks/reminders/to do lists that it's now painful. I had to move to Exchange to get this to work.

So far so good, but for my other email accounts (IMAP and POP) not much sync going on there.

OK so maybe Apple is "throwing one back" to allow Microsoft to gain a toehold.. since MS seems to be pretty Apple-friendly of late. Outlook has become too bloated but it isnt a bad app on Apple - it seems to use less memory, although where it stores stuff is a mystery to me as it appears to duplicate a lot of messages and stuff instead of using the underlying Apple constructs.

MS is playing better with Apple. Honestly, Neither MS or Apple have the solution to such an massive usage problem that it shocks me. Seems as though MS Outlook 2010 via Parallels is so bloated, but some very cool features (Evernote Plugin, Xobni, OneNote) that it's paralyzing for me to get used to. On the other hand Apple has gone to an extreme with simplicity.

We need to operate businesses with these machines. Period. I am forced to rethink the to do / reminders / workflow with additional apps (Things, OmniFocus) to have a solution. This all told takes thinking by me to not have 1 place to go to. This is what appeals to most users for MS Outlook 2010 - 1 place. My opinion is this is why most have adopted the MS suite.

I am stunned that Apple has so little information for us to even consider before upgrading to LION. Apple isn't an outreach, ask the audience brand to find what we want in their products. This release has me floored. Should have asked us what we thought hey?

Wanna know what I think? Other products I am buying / trying that should be a core part of the LION OS that I need to run my business.

I think for those who don't like the lost of ToDo from Mail, should rate Lion to one star from the Mac App Store. When I talked to people, so far all 19 of them (those not yet upgraded to Lion) did not aware of such disaster! They are (and I have been) expecting substantial enhancement to ToDo. All of them who realized no more To Do have decided to hold back and see if To Do comes back on next update.

Give one star to Lion.

I have previously given 4 stars, but unable to revise it. It's a sly Apple.

I think it's fairly obvious that with the integrated "Reminders" coming in iOS 5 in the next month or two, that it will be re-integrated into Lion Mail/iCal or there will be a central "Reminders" hub app in Lion, though that'd be a bit silly.

Why it wasn't included as it currently was in Snow Leopard, I don't know, though perhaps it would have been too precarious to basically have to re-write that functionality in Mail after a point update. I have a feeling it's already there, just inactive until iOS 5 goes live.

Hi DarkWolf777,

If you really think that "Reminders" will be re-integrated into Lion Mail, you will be disappointed.

See http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#reminders. It was written "Reminders also works with iCal, Outlook, and iCloud, so changes you make update automatically on all your devices and calendars." Sorry, OS X Mail is excluded.

The reality is: MS Outlook will be back.

The best iPhone/iPad app for syncing "todo's" (at least for now) is "2Do"... If you have a MobileMe account, it syncs fairly elegantly with what was Apple Mail "todo's" (now "reminders" in iCal) across all your devices. When iCloud goes live in the fall, iOS will bring the "Reminders" app native to the iOS, and I should have no need for "2Do" app anymore.

Hope that helps.
