Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

In Snow leopard, I would use a plantronics bluetooth headset for facetime and skype chats. Now, in Lion, I can't. I keep getting a bluetooth audio error. I live in a dead zone, so this is a pretty important thing for me.

The console shows the following errors:

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

I have also noticed that odd things happen to my audio as long as the device is paired, wether or not it is active. Audio is sometimes output as mono, volume controls do not work for the line out, and audio mutes (even thoguh it is shown as unmuted) at random moments. None of this can be resolved as long as the headset is paired.

Is there anything I can do to get my iMac to use the bluetooth earpiece that worked just fine in Snow Leopard?

I did download and install the latest xCode, once it is installed.

Click in the Xcode icon and open it.

In the top menu: Click on Xcode

then 'Open Developer Tools' -> 'More Developer Tools'

You will need to sign in or create an account as Xcode developer. When you sign in just type in the search field 'hardware io'.

Select and download the latest version of Hardware IO Tools for Xcode.

Once is download open the *.dmg file. In the other hand, in your application Xcode app folder do a right click and select: 'show package content'

Drag and drop all the tools from the 'hardware io' dmg file you just downloaded and place them in the 'contents->applications folder inside the Xcode app folder.

Now if you open the Xcode->Open Developers tools->Bluethoot Explorer

With Bluethoot Explorer open select from the top menu: Tools->Audio Options

I played with the options and realized that the problem was in my case with the bit rate. So I increased the number of packets that can be buffered to 50 and also the latency.

There are many bluethoot tools and graphs that you can use to troubleshoot and check where is the problem with the Xcode Hardware IO.

Let me know, with what configuration you were able to fix your problem.

Greetings.

chirodoody, or anyone else — if you want to do this:

1) open Terminal application (in Utilities folder)

2) type

sudo touch /var/log/bluetoothAudio.log <hit return>

sudo chmod 777 /var/log/bluetoothAudio.log <hit return>

3) pair your headset, use it, then reproduce the problem

4) then option-click on the Bluetooth menu extra and select "Create Diagnostics Report on Desktop" and email me the contents.

I am using a new MacbookPro 2.9Ghz OSX 10.7.4 and trying to use a bluetooth phone headset with Skype. Skype works fine. I can pair the Jawbone Original to the MacBook and the options appear in Skype. I can make a call fine or receive a call. The problem is after 60 seconds of inactivity (or something very close to that time) the headset goes offline (is no longer bold in the BT drop down).

I can hit the talk button which takes around 5-7 seconds to reconnect. This is okay if all I need to do is make another outgoing call, however it does not work for incoming calls. The headset doesn't reconnect in time and I get the Bluetooth Error has ocurred at some point as well.

Is there a way to eliminate this timeout of Bluetooth connectivity? I have read many forum posts but haven't found any workaround. I was thinking maybe a BT dongle might work but the issue seems to be with OSX as the problem seems to exist for people regardless of BT headset being used. Does anyone have experience with Jawbone Icon HD + Nerd dongle?

Thanks.

Thanks, I have a couple of songs on repeat with the volume down and it is working, i.e. my BT headset stays connected and I can make Skype calls without a hassle. I wonder what this will do to headset battery life (Jawbone Original)

Maybe it has something to do with how the headset is responding to the OSX or a little of both, but it seems a "small matter of programming" to address it, I would think. Having the thing disconnect after 60 seconds is bogus.

There is still room for a real solution for BT phone headsets connected to Mac.

I will not upgrade to Mountain Lion till I get a confirmation that Bluetooth is working as it should and is able to connect to my headset. meaning normally like my car Bluetooth and my Nokia phone are able to.

I upgraded to Safari- 6 and it will not recognised some password that where working fine B4, now I have to enter them all the times.

I upgraded to Mtn Lion. Trying a Jawbone Original with Skype on a new MacBook Pro. My problem was the connection timing out. It still does that after the upgrade...no change. My work around is to turn on iTunes, no volume to force the connection. I find that after a while (haven't clocked it) I can turn off iTunes and it stays connected. Ultimately though I get the Bluetooth Headset error message that has been described elsewhere in this thread.

The folks at Jawbone are telling me in their forum that the IconHD with the Nerd works but I'm not so sure, don't have time for an expensive buy and test right now. I'm using the standard apple headphones and a USB Plantronics for now.

I have upgraded to ML since I have not been able to use my BT audio devices since last summer when upgraded to Lion.

At first everything seemed to finally work but then after a while I was back to the same Audio error. I then realized that both my BT audio devices are also paired with my iPhone and when I turn off BT on the iPhone the BT audio works great on my MBA (late 2010). So conclusion is that the MBA can not connect or keep the connection while the iPhone is also communicating with the BT device, the iPhone is not using any audio at the time but the icon for battery etc is on so some communication is going on there, I assume they are in some sort of stand-by. So make sure your BT device is only paired with the Mac or anyother host it is paired with has its BT turned off.

I have a Jambox and a Jawbone ERA and both works great. I also noticed that the sound level on Jambox is greatly improved. I also upgraded both to the last software before I did the ML upgrade and I also re-paired them as part of the upgrade.

For those that still have probems please make a formal error report to Apple on this site (while I think they read the forums repeateable continuing problems should be reported too) and those that have HW that still have warranty please use it and call, that will also bring attention to the issue. (Reported the problem in Lion to both Apple and Jawbone since I belive that if both works on it they are more likley to fix it.)

Not sure if this 'final final' solution, but am now theorizing that it has something to do with handling of multiple bluetooth sources in range. I am using Plantonics Backbeat 903+ headset. The headset is not multipoint. I think what is happening is (at least in my case) is that several sources are fighting for access to the headset. Serindipity had it that I turned off bluetooth on my iPhone this morning. Suddenly, my headset is working flawlessly with my MacPro.
