Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

In Snow leopard, I would use a plantronics bluetooth headset for facetime and skype chats. Now, in Lion, I can't. I keep getting a bluetooth audio error. I live in a dead zone, so this is a pretty important thing for me.

The console shows the following errors:

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

I have also noticed that odd things happen to my audio as long as the device is paired, wether or not it is active. Audio is sometimes output as mono, volume controls do not work for the line out, and audio mutes (even thoguh it is shown as unmuted) at random moments. None of this can be resolved as long as the headset is paired.

Is there anything I can do to get my iMac to use the bluetooth earpiece that worked just fine in Snow Leopard?

iMac 7,1, Mac OS X (10.7)

Thumbs down with 10.7.2 for me. I'm using a Plantronics P590 headphone/headset. While the headphone part works fine (as it did in prior Lion releases), the headset part does not. It doesn't matter whether I use the 8kHz 1ch 16bit input (mike) or output (headset) or both. The errors logged to the console, however, are different now:

2011-10-13 12:47:20.000 PM kernel: [SendHCIRequestFormatted] ### ERROR: [0x0428] (Setup Synchronous Connection) -- Send request failed (err = 0x001A (kBluetoothHCIErrorUnsupportedRemoteFeature))

This solution worked perfectly to fix the same issue described here with my Sennheiser MM400 Bluetooth headset (requires XCode to be installed):

http://ismashphone.com/2011/08/how-to-fix-bluetooth-pairing-in-mac-os-x-lion-iss ues.html

1) Launch Bluetooth Explorer (a utility installed as Part of Xcode).

2) Select the “Modify Software & Device Configuration” from the Utilities Menu.

3) Keep the first four checkboxes checked (one of those will say “Full Factory Reset”)

4) Click “Perform Actions” on the lower-right portion of the window.

5) Reboot (the “Reboot Now” Button may work, it it doesn’t just go with a normal reboot)/

Yea, sorry about that. There was a plethora of problems being described here. This fixed the "eternal spinning rainbow beachball of death in the menu bar" problem where it just had issues really connecting to the headset. I had zero hopes it would work and then it actually did, quite well too.

Bluetooth stacks are not exactly "mature" technologies (I've never seen one work flawlessly). I'm thinking the answer lies in loading your own in to utilize via OS X.

I too had awful sound from my new Jawbone, but I updated the software from JamBox and now the thing is actually pretty good to use now.

I may be fortunate in that I have had little problem with the bluetooth. I erased all old profiles and then used the utility to add the Jam Box. I did not have to do that for the Jaw Bone. I turned off accepting signals from incoming audio devices and I also unchecked the box allowing the bluetooth device to turn the unit on.

I have rock solid bluetooth performance all the way around and I am running 10.7.2.

I am almost through the list of options, nothing worked yet. BTW, if you cannot remove the battery but would like to try the reset of the power mangement, try this:

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note
    : The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

OK, I went through everything on the list, I even installed XCode and did the terminal command to delete all BT preference files. I repaired the disk permissions and everything. Afterward, I got BT working for about 10-15min, and then it crashed again. I had managed to get a skype call working with the headset and I watched a youtube video via Plantronics Pro and it worked fine.

Then I got the BT error again (for no apparent reason), and now all the BT devices are removed again. 😟

On the positive side, the airprint activator that for some reason did not work before is working now, so the cleanup helped with other items. Now I can print on the network printer from the iPhone when the MacBook Pro is on. 🙂

That said, the BT headset is still useless with OS X Lion and the Jambox does not work with the laptop, even though it works fine with the iPhone.

I don't know why, or how, but it seems much better the last few days after I went through all of the list. I still get occasional crashes, in particular when using Skype with the headset, but I actually watched a few web videos and audio programs online now and the audio worked fine via the Plantronics Pro in the last few days. Also, the was a EFI firmware update yesterday, maybe that will do something as well? At least it seems to connect automatically now when on etc.
