Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

In Snow leopard, I would use a plantronics bluetooth headset for facetime and skype chats. Now, in Lion, I can't. I keep getting a bluetooth audio error. I live in a dead zone, so this is a pretty important thing for me.

The console shows the following errors:

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

I have also noticed that odd things happen to my audio as long as the device is paired, wether or not it is active. Audio is sometimes output as mono, volume controls do not work for the line out, and audio mutes (even thoguh it is shown as unmuted) at random moments. None of this can be resolved as long as the headset is paired.

Is there anything I can do to get my iMac to use the bluetooth earpiece that worked just fine in Snow Leopard?

iMac 7,1, Mac OS X (10.7)

I did download and install the latest xCode, once it is installed.

Click in the Xcode icon and open it.

In the top menu: Click on Xcode

then 'Open Developer Tools' -> 'More Developer Tools'

You will need to sign in or create an account as Xcode developer. When you sign in just type in the search field 'hardware io'.

User uploaded file

Select and download the latest version of Hardware IO Tools for Xcode.

Once is download open the *.dmg file. In the other hand, in your application Xcode app folder do a right click and select: 'show package content'

User uploaded file

Drag and drop all the tools from the 'hardware io' dmg file you just downloaded and place them in the 'contents->applications folder inside the Xcode app folder.

Now if you open the Xcode->Open Developers tools->Bluethoot Explorer

With Bluethoot Explorer open select from the top menu: Tools->Audio Options

I played with the options and realized that the problem was in my case with the bit rate. So I increased the number of packets that can be buffered to 50 and also the latency.

There are many bluethoot tools and graphs that you can use to troubleshoot and check where is the problem with the Xcode Hardware IO.

Let me know, with what configuration you were able to fix your problem.

Greetings.

> I have the plantronics voyager 520.

So we're both working with the exact same headset. If you get an answer, please let me know. I will do the same for you.

I'm guessing it might me a (rare) hardware incompatability problem at this point, but (hopefully) someone else will chime in with some guidance and/or experience with this issue.

Best regards,

Lou

I am in a similar boat - mine is a Plantronics Explorer 210. I used for voice chat as my Mac Pro had no mic, now I cannot use it any longer. Just has that bluetooth error. When I use it as an audio device. I get on console:

25/07/11 8:14:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

25/07/11 8:15:03.000 PM kernel: Sound assertion "mFirstConvert && ( numSampleFrames > currentSampleFrame)" failed in AppleHDAEngine at line 2349 goto Exit

25/07/11 8:15:07.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

This issue will lock up facetime or ichat. requiring a Force Quit.

Hope this gets fixed!

I’m having similar problems with my Sennheiser MM 550 Travel Bluetooth headphones. After the initial pairing and selecting the headphones for output, sound plays well for awhile, but usually after a few minutes audio to the headphones will suddenly drop out. If I deselect and reselect the headphones for output, I get the same “Bluetooth Audio Error” message as you do. Like others, leaving the headphones paired causes occasional system freezes followed by the “Bluetooth Audio Error” message again.

For now, I have unpaired my headphones and connected them to my Mac with a cable. I’m hoping Apple will fix this in a future OS X update.

I thought the Apple support folks might monitor these issue threads.

It would be somewhat reassuring if they would at least acknowledge the issue.

I'd like to know if _any_ bluetooth headsets are working under Lion, but folks who don't have problems aren't likely to pay attention to our posts.

Best regards,

Lou

I have a Sony DR-BT101 and they seem to pair correctly, but after that the headset appears as "unconnected".

I tried to pair and unpair and some of the times i get them working for a short period. Another time I got a kernel panic and i had to reboot the computer.

I never tryed before (ie, with Snow Leopard) to pair them, i just tried it with Lion in a Mac Mini late 2010
