Internet stops working frequently on OS X Lion

I have the exact same issue. Internet will stop (I am connected through wired ethernet). Toggling on or off WiFi seems to wake it up.

I have exactly the same issue, the wifi connection between my imac and wifi modem suddenly stop, and I have to reconnect it again. I hope that apple release the new patch to resolved this issue

I have the same issue. I will get about half an hour connected via WiFi, then I will attempt to load a new page in Safari and the connection terminates. Shutting off WiFi, then turning it on tells me the connection cannot be established, but has timed out. I have to go upstairs and power-cycle my wireless router to regain functionality.

I am facing the same issue, only with a slight difference. My entire system sort of hits a halt, apps still work, but they refuse to close.

I am using Internet Sharing to share my internet connection from my iMac's Ethernet port to the WiFi. After a while, not only the iMac's internet stops working, the internet sharing stops working too, not to my surprise. Restarting the computer seems to solve the problem but not 100% of the time, and everytime I try to restart the system, all my open apps seem to refuse to close and I have to either force quit them, which works sometimes, or do a force shutdown by holding the power button for a few seconds.

Making the Ethernet port inactive and reactivating it does not solve the problem, nor does disconnecting the ethernet cable and reconnecting it.

I have a little software installed that monitors my network activity and displays it in the menu bar. I have it currently monitoring my Ethernet port and what happens when the internet connection stops working is that the Ethernet port, although still connected and with a green light, just stops sending and receiving data, sometimes it does receive some data but it stays at 30-60 B/s.

I'm sure this is an issue with OS X Lion because I had never had this issue with Snow Leopard until I upgraded to Lion.

Realy hoping for some guidance from Apple here on how to tackle this issue, it's quite annoying to have to restart my iMac all the time. I am used to leaving my iMac on all the time cause I access it remotely often using LogMeIn on my iPad. As well as that, I have other network services running and it's quite annoying to try and access my iMac remotely and find out it is offline because Lion refuses to keep me connected to the internet.

I've got exactly the same issue. Wired internet won't connect when computer wakes.

I've had so many issues with Lion, I've now restored back to Snow Leopard.

Wonder if I can get my money back (not fit for purpose?)

Ok, I managed to fix my issue. And does it make the internet go a heck of a lot faster (btw).

Open up preferences and go to network. Make not of your settings as you will have to rebuild them.

Rename the preferences.plist to .old which can be found here: /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

No go back to preferences and rebuild your settings as it will be blank. You may have to manually recreate a new location and then hit apply. This recreates a new preferences.plist

I haven't had any problems since and the speed is much quicker.

I have a very similar problem; first my iMac's Wi-Fi Internet sharing will go down after a few hours, and then my wired Ethernet connection. My applications will then refuse to close, at which point Lion won't let me restart via a software command, and soon after all my applications will lock up entirely one by one, until the Finder locks up, and I'm forced to do a hard restart.

Essentially, whatever is causing my Internet connection to go down is taking my entire system with it.

....and the last time it happened, Spotlight decided it needs to reindex my hard drive. Hopefully it won't happen again in the three hours it will take to accomplish that.

Yeah, that happened to me a few times too.

I tried to do what James_N suggested and everything seems to be working so far. Hopefully I won't have that problem again.

Been running my iMac since yesterday and the problem seems to be gone after following the steps described by James_N

Anyone else managed to fix the problem?

UPDATE 2

Forgot to mention that you need to restart your system for it to work properly. Once you restart it all network interfaces will appear back on your System Preferences

That seems to have done it. I haven't had a problem in seven hours.
