Q: Internet stops working frequently on OS X Lion

If you've been running Time Machine backups regularlt, going back to SL is a doddle.

Restart your computer holding down the option key.

Select restore option.

Follow instructions, and choose exactly what point in time you want to restore from (just before you upgraded to Lion).

The computer does the rest.

It took mine about 30 minutes, and all's now o.k.

I may be wrong, but as far as I'm aware, if you haven't taken backups before you loaded Lion, then the only way is to erase your HDD, and do a clean install from the supplied Snow Leopard discs.

There are plenty of threads on here about the subject. Someone else may have other ideas about how to go back.

I'd like to stress to everyone encountering this issue that removing your settings and network interface files from the System/Library as described by James_N and rebooting your system afterwards should work in all case scenarios.

This problem is most likely caused by an incompatibility between the old settings used by Snow Leopard and the new code introduced in Lion.

If even after deleting those files you still encounter problems please try to follow the steps described in this post:

The steps above should force the system to rebuild all your network preferences and interfaces and therefore have them fixed. This is definitely a problem caused by a migration issue from Snow Leopard and is only occouring to people that have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. I have a MacBook with a clean install of OS X Lion and it hasn't had this issue so far.

Downgrading to Snow Leopard is really unecessary as there is a solution to this problem.

If anyone needs further help to rebuild their settings and network interfaces just let me know!

I had 24 hours (almost exactly) of good success with James_M's solution, but when I got home from work I found that my connection had dropped and my sytem locked.

I tried the solution listed in the thread you just linked to... I'll let you know how that goes.

Hi - I'm new to Apple and most reluctant to tamper with any system settings - can I hope that Apple will recognise this issue and get out a patch any time soon ?

Partial success... at least I seem to have identified where my problem lies.

I have an Ethernet connection hooked up directly to my iMac, and am using Internet Sharing to allow my XBox to connect to the Internet via WiFi: it turns out that Connect360, the app that I was using to stream content from my iMac to my XBox, was what was causing my system to lock up when my Internet connection went down. I thought the most recent version of it had made it Lion compatible, but I was mistaken. I uninstalled it and started using an alternative app that is Lion compatible, and no more lock-ups.

But.

My Internet connection still drops every few hours (not just the Internet Sharing/WiFi, but my main Ethernet connection as well). When it happens, the Network pane in System Preference tells me I'm still connected just fine, but I'm clearly not. Turning my connection off (both Internet Sharing/WiFi from the Sharing pane *and* my Ethernet connection from the Network pane) and then on again will restart my connection. If I then leave Internet Sharing/WiFi turned off, my Ethernet connection will stay active as normal, apparently indefinitely.

All of which leads me to believe that my problem is Internet Sharing related.

Stop using Safari all together. We had the same problem on our machines bar one - user hates Safari with a passion, never uses it.

My MBP takes up to seven seconds to open a localhost page in Safari - instant in Chrome. Firefox is slow as well but doesn't seem to affect the rest of the system.

When Safari runs I have problems with the FTP in Espresso and Coda not working as well as Wireless dropping off. Close Safari and it all works fine. Also found that my machine is much more responsive with Safari closed. So much for the flag ship browser

I can confirm that, even though the fix I described worked for a while, after two days or so running fine the same problem happened again.

I was talking to a friend today and he confirmed to me that Apple has acknowledged the problem and that they are preparing a fix for it, however he said that the fix would be released for Snow Leopard as this is a migration problem, in which case only people that haven't upgraded to Lion yet would benefit. I'm not too sure if they will also release a fix for Lion but it makes sense that they would.

Like I said, this is a problem that is definitely caused by migrating from Snow Leopard to Lion. For now, the only solution I see is to copy all your important files to an external hard disk, format your Mac and do a clean install of OS X Lion using a disk (instructions on how to create a disk for OS X Lion can be found here: http://lifehacker.com/5823096/how-to-burn-your-own-lion-install-dvd-or-flash-dri ve you will need a Double-Layer DVD of 8GB or a USB Stick with 8GB or more)

Once you created the DVD or USB Stick, follow the steps described in the link above and do a clean install of Lion by formatting your hard disk and installing it afterwards.

Once Lion is installed it's important that you do not use a Time Machine Backup to restore your system to it's previous state as this WILL bring the issue back with your old system and setting files. You'll need to manually copy your personal files (stay clear of copying any files from your old ~/Library or /System/Library). You will also need to re-install all software you previously had in your system.

This is an imediate solution, the other option is to wait for Apple to release a fix for this issue, which I'm not sure when that will be.

Definitely a bug. I purchased a new mac mini , and I'm encountering the same issues. Called the helpdesk, and they were less than helpful. The frustrating and embarrassing part is....I bought the mac mini as a second computer for my 2006 Intel IMac because things were running really slow when I upgraded, and Safari and Chrome kept falling over. ! I can believe my  Window 7 work PC works better than my Mac!

Update on my situation!

After enountering the problem described in this forum I applied the fix proposed by James_N but still after a few hours the problem persisted. I decided to then format my iMac and do a clean install of OS X Lion and everything is now working fine so far.

I have reasons to believe that this might be a problem caused either by migration or by incompatible network software which is usually transferred to the new OS via either the normal upgrade process which keeps all the old files and program and upgrades only the OS, or in the case of new machines with fresh installs of OS X Lion, by restoring a Time Machine Backup which contains incompatible settings files OR incompatible software, I'm still not sure wich one of the two.

If you encountered this problem when you upgraded, or if you purchased a new Mac, restored a backup and is encountering this problem, do a fresh install of OS X Lion like I described in my previous posts and you should not face this problem again. This seems to be the only solution until Apple releases a fix for this problem.
