Anyone know any other (possibly) free alternative to Mac the Ripper 2.6.6 ( i never was able to get hold of newer version-too complicated)

Yes , I know I should have checked before instaling Lion about POwerPC apps but forgot about that one.

Thanks for the heads up.

There is a version 3.0 out there if you can access it and it opens in Lion

I know there is but the process of getting it appeared so complicated to me I gave up - if you know what i mean.

    Thanks

Others to consider are: Fairmount, VLC, Handbrake

Or you could go commercial with RipIt which isn't terribly expensive, and has actually worked better for me then MtR 3.0 on a few things.

I second the recommendation for RipIt.

I love the RipIt interface, found Mac DVDRipper works on everything you'll throw at it...but both of these applications are paid. They're both worth the money. Download the free trial to see which you prefer.

However, I use MacTheRipper 3, and have found it to be compact, familiar, and easy to use. And free.

    Hi all,

thanks for the suggestions - I have tried all three trial versions, they seem to work great.

The only issue is, as far as I can see, that they do not rip the DVDs in a format that is visible to play in Frontrow (i have reinstalled it in Lion). I like using Front row and it's convenience with the Apple remote.

Am I missing something or is this the way these work?

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. MTR 4.1 is out but the process of getting it is again very complicated throught their forums etc.

Just a reminder that use of these programs violates US Copyright Law; users elsewhere in the world should check with their local legislative authority.

Some controversy on this issue. Some organizations like the RIAA claim that anytime you copy a piece of media, even a movie you already paid for, that it's a violation of copyright laws. Macworld, on the other hand, claims that it's all right to duplicate media you've already paid for. The common ground: make sure the media you rip is what you own.

As for MTR; v3 is usable on Lion, but v4 is only usable on PowerPC; I have not been able to verify if Lion will work with v4.1.

No matter what MacWorld has to say, it's a violation of the DMCA if you have to defeat an encryption scheme to make the copy, irrespective of whether you own the copy you're ripping.

Mostly it's just a heads up.

It's a stigma that all dvd rippers are ripping huge blockbusters and pirating. I need a program to rip/ encrypt one of my short films to be able to make a demo reel for my self

  • William Kucharski Level 6 Level 6 (14,890 points)

If it's your movie, shouldn't you have an unencrypted copy somewhere, like the video used to create the original DVD?

I'm the actress and the director only gave me a encrypted copy of the film. Thus I am left with only a copy to play in the DVD player. Not wanting to honor completing a demo reel for me I need to rip to make a reel for my resume and try for something of a career. Ugh, also I have another dilemma, the director is not doing anything with the film so I need to rip it,  make a trailer and then do what I need to send it all out to withoutabox.com to try and get it into festivals myself so all my hard work isn't down the drain. Yeah, that's my the ripping story :S
