Saving .html files in TextEdit with OSX Lion

HELP!!!

Just upgraded to Lion.

When i paste html code into TextEdit and save as .html, the moment i edit and save that same file it automatically changes the extension of the file from .html to .txt..how do i turn this off so that it saves it as .html?? in Snow Leopard it never did this.

Many Thanks.

I went to the apple store this weekend and none of the reps could figure it out.

They acknowledged that it was an issue as they have been getting other complaints about it.

Hopefully Apple will be releasing an update to fix this issue as i am certain we are not the only ones complaining about it.

Unfortunately right now the only option you have is to manually rename your .txt file to .html each time you make a change. Very annoying.

I ran into this just today. The only solution I could find was to revert to .txt untll I want to view through the browser. After saving, I then edit the extension from .txt to .html in the finder without saving, then drag the file icon down to the browser in the dock to view as a web page. Once I do any editing in the source file, it reverts back to .txt and the browser can't find .html to refresh because it no longer exists in the Finder directory. What I have been doing is workable, but it's a huge nuisance not to mention frustration. I consider it a bug and plan to report it as one. - Al

Indeed it is 🙂

The workarounds we have been using are extremely annoying.

Tell me about it.

Forgive my ignorance but how do you report a bug to apple? I would have dont this a while ago when i first encountered this issue but figured enough people would experience it to complain as well.

If you are working with HTML files, I suggest TextWranger. Personally, I prefer the old Xcode3, but you have to jump through some hoops to get it installed on Lion. TextEdit and Preview to some extent are mainly demo programs. Apple is using them to hightlight the new features of Autosave, Versions, and Duplicate. Be careful what you ask for, Apple. These features are getting attention, but not the good kind.
