Trouble with audio interface (E-MU 0404) on OS X Lion

After I install "OS X Lion" from "Mac App Store" system can't find my audio interface ("Creative E-MU 0404 USB"), I see Audio Card in System Profiler, but it doesn't apear in "System Preference - Audio".

Also, "Creative Proffessional Software" doesn't run under Lion, because it's a "PowerPC" application, but I install update from June, 2010.

Is it possible that driver was written for "PPC", and now "Lion" doesn't support it, and what should I do?

Now, I'm waiting for response from Creative Support, I wrote then this Saturday. But.. I think I'll be waiting for it a long time 😁 I try to sell this card, but it so expensive, and need only for professionals.. I can't imagine, that Creative for a six years didn't refresh drivers from PowerPC. I suppouse Apple said Creative, that PPC is not supported by OS X Lion.. So.. Waiting for response from Creative and sell the E-MU if they will not update drivers.

Same problem for me. I wrote to the support as well last week but noone replied me since then. I suggest noone should ever buy again Creative products after such treatment of their customers. They haven't updated drivers for ages(since 2007) and released some beta in June 2010 which was as buggy as the previous 2007 version. Though I really enjoyed the soundcard I will never buy again any of Creative products, evaaar!

Got a response this morning:

"Mattias,

We are sorry to inform you at this time Technical Support has not been informed by product development, as to when
OSX Lion drivers will be available. Technical support is not the place where E-MU discusses or discloses upcoming
product development or non released features and functions. That is done via marketing, usually through an official
press release, and usually done at a trade show event and/or posted on our website.

Please remember the more information you provide, including previous correspondence in your mail, helps in troubleshooting and solving the problem you are experiencing.

Thank You

I really liked my Emu interface. 😢

Yes switching to 32-bit solved the problem for me:

Here is the command for Lion:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

to switch back to 64-bit mode use:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

Don't forget to reboot.

E-mu app still doesn't work for obvious reasons but the interface appears in sound preferences.

Quite frankly, having to switch to 32-bit mode, to use My 0404 Audio interface, that is btw still being sold alongside competitor interfaces in the same price range (From Cakewalk, Tascam etc. etc.), that have OS X Lion (or at least intel native) drivers that allow their cards to be used with maximum efficiency, is completely unacceptable.

I wrote the tech support, and (like everyone else I've heard about) I got a copy/paste answer, saying that the tech-supporters in E-MU had no idea what the plans of the development team were, in regards to updating the drivers for the E-MU 0404.

Here's the reply I got from them, when I tried to get some clarity on all of this:

and I don't blame the tech-support. The entire thing has been thrown on their shoulders, as E-MU seemingly couldn't give enough of a !#€% to even update them about the situation.

I suppose this problem could have been averted a loooooooong time ago, by simply updating the drivers for the unit, when Apple went Intel (I suppose the 0404 is pre 2005, when Apple changed to Intel Architecture? If not, this is even more of an outrage).

As many others, the fact that the drivers were PPC and not Intel makes me wonder if I've been running the interface all this time, with un-needed latency.

This is definitely the last time I buy anything from E-MU, or Creative for that matter.

Sad news.

Even in 32-bit kernel mode 0404 doesn't work properly.

If you digitize sound you'll get digital noise that is not related to system processes. It looks like strong distoritions, sometimes once in a mintue, somethimes more often.

If you hear the sound via the card itself it is fine, but you'll get it distorted in the file. I spent like a week trying many things - nope. Distortions are there.

Bye, e-mu. Never again. Go to a firewire card.
