my hard drive won't be recognized after os x lion update!!!

Hey, I just updated my MacBook Pro 13" to OS X Lion today, and now my WD Elements External Hard Drive will not be read by my Mac at all anymore. Is there gonna be a software update on my hard drive's end that will become compatible with Lion eventually, or am I screwed? Has this happened to anyone also, or do I need to go with another hard drive manufacturer....help plz!!!!

I downgraded back to Snow Leopard after the inital Lion Upgrade to recover my hard drive contents. I then waited for the 10.7.1 upgrade and created a partition on my hard drive to install Lion to test it before a full install. I created a 200GB partition on my WD drive purely for time machine back ups too. Lion worked fine for about a week with no issues so I took the plunge and decided to do a full install.

I created a DVD install disk, created a time machine back up then wiped my drive and deleted the Lion partition. I reinstalled Lion and implemented the Time Machine restore and it was flawless. Everything was back in place, including all my mail in the mail app, dates in iCal and all my installed apps and their settings bar a few. Even my iPhone continued to sync with no errors.

Most importantly, my WD drive was recognised and has continued to work fine since. I'm on 10.7.2 now and using iCloud with no issues either.

So a happy ending at last!

I upgrated to Lion 10.7.2 this past weekend and my WD Passport Elite external USB hard drive stopped working correctly. After reading this thread, I decided to go to the WD website and reinstalled the drivers for my USB external HD. Available at : http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=204&sid=108&lang=en. After reinstalling and restarting, my WD Passport appears to be working again. Hopefully I won't encounter any more problems.

For what it's worth, it appears that WD's latest software updated is dated October 11, 2011.

I didn't have to reformat the WD hard drive. I just reinstalled the WD external HD driver so that the imac with Lion 10.7.2 recognizes it again. Quick update though: I noticed that when the computer went to sleep, the hard drive lost connection again. So in order to finish a time machine backup, I have told the computer "never" to go to sleep. Hopefully this will permit me to get a time machine backup onto my WD external HD.

Me, too, on this topic:

Hi, I have a big problem!

MY SPEC:

- Mac Mini Server "Mid 2010" / Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 + Windows 7 Ultimate / Core2Duo 2.66Ghz / 4Gb DDR3 /...

- 1TB LaCie D2 Quadra enclosure which include: 1 X USB 2.0, 2 X Firewire 800, 1 X Firewire 400, 1 X E-Sata.

- HDD 3.5" Hitachi 3Tb (7K3000) SATA3 / 7200rpm / 64Mb Cache.

MY STORY:

- After my 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra is out of warranty, I decide to upgrade the HDD inside the enclosure from 1Tb (original) to 3Tb (I bought by myself). Ok, the way to open the enclosure is not the problem with me and I replaced the HDD inside on successful.

- After upgrade HDD to Hitachi 3Tb, my Mac OS X Lion and Windows 7 Ultimate now could see ONLY 800Gb partition instead of 3Tb! OK, no problem, I plugged my 3Tb HDD to SATA port on the normal PC running Windows 7 Ultimate. The PC could see whole 3Tb through Disk Management tool. I used that tool to format the 3Tb HDD to NTFS (just 1 partition).

- Everything running well.

- OK, I put back the 3Tb HDD into LaCie D2 Quadra Enclosure then connected the enclosure to my Mac Mini again through USB 2.0 port. But, so straight, My Lion 10.7.2 still could access 800Gb ONLY!!! I boot to Windows 7 Ultimate through Bootcamp on my Mac Mini. Now the Windows 7 on my Mac could see full 3Tb as the normal PC did. I tried many ways to force my Mac Os X Lion to recognize full 3Tb, but NO Luck! (Try to use Macdrive 8 on Windows 7 Ultimate to format the 3Tb from NTFS to HFS+, NO Luck! Tried the difference ports like Firewire 800, Firewire 400... NO Luck!).

- I really need to use that enclosure on my Mac OS X Lion! Please give me the solutions! Like a software or firmware update... to do it. I saw you have the 3Tb LaCie D2 Quadra - USB 3.0 / Firewire 800 is similar with my device, so that I think I could use some methods from that device to apply to my device!

Sorry for my bad English and have a good day!

^^ Thank you so much in advance! ^^

I've had a similar problem and seen many similar discussions. The problem with using Disk Utility in my case was that the external USB drive could not be seen by DU or anything else. Restarting my Mac (late 2011 MBP/10.7.2) and repeated plugging/unplugging/poweron/poweroff off of the drive were ineffective. That is until I started up in SAFE mode (restart holding down the SHIFT key). I then connected a different drive which did show up on the desktop. Whether this had any real curative effect I can't say but after that the original drive mounted fine.

Since I haven't seen any better cures for this problem, I'm going to post this on other similar threads. Hope this helps.

try macfuse download i have 2/3 hdds now working

MacFUSE is a FUSE-Compliant File System Implementation Mechanism for Mac OS X. MacFUSE implements a mechanism that makes it possible to implement a fully functional file system in a user-space program on Mac OS X (10.4 and above). It aims to be API-compliant with the FUSE (Filesystem in USErspace) mechanism that originated on Linux. Therefore, many existing FUSE file systems become readily usable on Mac OS X. The core of MacFUSE is in a dynamically loadable kernel extension.

I have a lacie 1TB Neil Poulton model (the black shiny box with blue light) and it is not in Disk Utilities or Finder since Lion upgrade. Not very techie, I have tried everything I know how to do. Strangely, my rugged orange 500 GB lacie shows up and is working fine. I have a lot of irreplaceable photos on the 1TB lacie--what can I do to get it recognized on my iMac without having to lose/erase all the data on it?

I suggest you read this first (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964) and if you've tried everything they suggest in the Before Resetting the SMC section then reset the SMC as shown:

Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
  3. Wait fifteen seconds.
  4. Attach the computer's power cord.
  5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

I would just add to step 5, when you turn your iMac on hold down the SHIFT key to go into SAFE MODE. Plug in your orange LeCie first and if it shows up then plug in the Poulton. I had the same problem and this is what worked for me. Of course at the time I was flailing around for a solution so it would be interesting to see if this works again.

es I too have the same. My V machine from parallels wont work. No supporting for sandisc recovery program,

Bit concerned as if All my hard drive with I photo and aperture gets up dated to Lion. I may not be able to use it on my mac book with snow leopard

However you should see the icon for your external if you have lion set to see them on your desk top or in finder.

open the Icon fine the file of the date you want to back up from. and then do it manulaly. Or take it to mac and they will do it for you.

the problem is with Apple, it's that simple. had the same issues for a year now on 10.6, sometimes the external hard drives mount, most of the times they don't. No logic at all, completely random occurance. apple just isn't what it used to be, been using the Mac since 93, believe me, it used to be very different. Don't waste any more of your time, the company is ignoring your problems and not admitting any fault in this matter, as yu can see looking at the response in this thread.
