Keep losing wifi connection on iMac after Lion upgrade

Same problem here, frequent WiFi drops. Using iMac 27" (early 2010 model), Airport Extreme g (UFO shape) as main router and Two Airport Express for remote speakers. Problem happen after Lion and iTunes 10.4 update.

Keeps dropping connection on LION machine 10 times per hour. 10.6 machine has no problem.

Same problem here. The only thing that seems to consistently fix this is for me to power cycle the dsl modem.

Try this guys...

1) Open the Terminal utility and copy and past this:

ping `route get default | awk '(/gateway/){print $2}'`

2) Open your System Preferences/Network and using the Advanced tab, enter this under DNS servers:

8.8.8.8

I didn't do number 2. I only did number 1, but now everything is acting like I never got the Lion update! All of the features that came with Lion are now gone! I don't want this! How do I revert? Please help!

Huh? That wouldn't happen, doing #1. Technical impossibility.

Not saying you don't have the symptoms you describe, but something else is up.

The "ping" command as pasted above simply sends out a tiny signal and notes that it bounced back, to keep your connection active and awake. It has no overlap or relation to system settings in any way.

To go back to what you had prior to taking step #1, you would only have to Quit Terminal and voila, it's done.

But if you really have a loss of all Lion features, then this isn't the reason. Is it possible you didn't run the installer? Check under the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen and pull down to choose "About This Mac."

What does it say there under the version of OS X that you're using?

As it turns out, after I did step one, for some reason dashboard changed back to how it was when I had Snow Leopard. I just assumed that since this changed, that I had also lost all of my other Lion features. I did quit Terminal. Only doing step one actually DID fix the wifi problem that i was having, but for some reason, even after I quit Terminal, dashboard is still the same as it was in Snow Leopard. I guess I could live with it, but I would prefer to have it reverted. I'm not quite sure how this happened. When I go to "About This Mac," it says that I'm running Mac OS X 10.7, which I do believe is Lion. I'm just confused as to why my dashboard's interface is the same that it was when I was running Snow Leopard, however all of my other Lion features are displaying and functioning properly.

You need to keep Terminal running to keep the ping activity ongoing. What I do is just command+H (hide) Terminal and let it run itn the background. It will start running again even after sleep or closing the laptop lid and opening again. So you only need to do this step one time and let it run util Apple sends a real fix.

About Dashboard, I'm not sure since I'm still getting used to Lion's Mission Control myself, but I recall seing this as a feature of that new option, that uou can go back and forth between old and new dashboard styles. This one is probably a solution Google could cover. Try searching "Dashboard Lion Misson Control"

I re-installed Lion on my MacBook pro and it fixed the problem (except on iChat) but it did not help my wife's Macbook.

update your lion to 10.7.1 and do these:

1)reset smc

2)reset pram

it works well for me.i've never suffer from the wifi problem since then!

Just got off the phone with AC, my wifi was dropping off every 30 seconds or so (running 10.7.1) The solution they gave me seems to work so far. Don't remember what he said we were re-setting

1) Shut down and unplug everything (power cable and USB devices included)

wait about 15 seconds and plug the power back in

2) Push the powerbutton, and hold down option-command-P-R

you will hear the normal startup sound (the screen will go dark like its resetting)

continue to hold until you hear the start up sound a second time and release.

3) Allow the computer to boot as normal.

It's been about an hour and I havn't had a drop yet. I'll edit this if it starts acting up again.

NateKH, I was hopefull on your solution and tried it...however i'm having the same problem. Did it work for you?

Sorry, I have to tell this to anyone since I spent days traing to solve the this with no success:

There is definitely a hardware issue with the Airport card of the 27" (Mid 2010) iMacs that cannot be solved by software patches. It does not even matter if you are using Snow Leopard or Lion. I just didn't realize it before because I had the Mac connected via ethernet cable.

Now I bought an inexpensive 3rd party WiFi USB card and I got no connection problems at all! It seems to be the only valid workaround for now. I spent 30 dollars and my iMac is finally online for 10 days in a row without any problems.

I can only recomment to do the same to all people going crazy with their constant connection drops.

same here! iMac mid 2010 model! with snow leopard there was no probs! just got lion and dropping like 5-10 times an hour!!!

come on apple, sort this please!!
