Q: Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade

I upgraded my Mac Mini (2010 version) from Snow Leopard to Lion today and all is good except that I can no longer get the Mac to go to sleep.

If I select Sleep from the apple menu, the screen will go black but the Mac does not sleep (the white light on the front does not pulse and the bluetooth keyboard and magic trackpad do not sleep either). Tapping the trackpad will wake the screen again.

I also have a 15" core i7 MacBook Pro that I have upgraded to Lion but this sleeps OK.

All was OK with the Mac Mini under Snow Leopard and no new software (other than Lion of course) has been added.

Any suggestions?

Thanks In advance,

Steve

Im surprised my Mac Mini 2010 (8GB RAM) isn't having this problem as I almost expect it to happen any time I upgrade, and not just major upgrades, but incremental ones as well.  Have you fixed disk permissions?

Run Console.app and there should be a log message indicating why it isn't sleeping.

Go back in time a little further. This is after it has already awakened. Make note of the time you actually issue the sleep command, wait a bit, and then check for logs starting at that time. Here is the output from my last sleep command at 2:52. My sleep was successful as you can see by the last message. After that, the next message is at 4-something:

Mine isn't sleeping either- regardless of whether I have my secondary display (24" TV) hooked up or not.  Also, getting some weird issues with mirroring displays changing the background on my MacBook's Display to the display set for the secondary monitor- even when the secondary monitor is off, but I'll post that in a different related thread.

Do I have a virus or something here?  This is what I'm getting for messages when I run Console.  This isn't making any sense, whatsoever.  Neither is the insane number of "Firewall: Stealth connection attempt to...." with a string of IP addresses at the end of each line.  That messages appears anywhere from every 5-20 minutes, almost seemingly at random when my MacBook should be asleep.

This is what happened when I tried to just let the MacBook go to sleep on it's own using my Energy Saver settings of 15 minutes.  It should have gone to sleep around 10:20.  Notice, it did not:

Got this after I manually put it to sleep (via Apple Menu) and then woke it up via mouse click on trackpad (because swiping or mouse clicking on my external mouse no longer wakes it up):

I unplugged my MacBook to test the battery issue, and when I came back a little while later, it was asleep.  So, I double checked Energy Saver preferences, and noticed that it was set to never sleep (it's still not sleeping when I close the lid).  Now, I could have sworn that I had changed that, but I do admit- working third shift has made things rather interesting for my mental capabilities of late.  So, I'm reset that to 15 minutes like I wanted, and I'm going to go to work and see what happens.  I am going to restart before I leave, just to see if rebooting is resetting system preferences.  When I come back from work, I'll let you know more.

So, it did go to sleep while plugged in via Energy Saver preferences.

I just wish it would go to sleep, while plugged in, when I close the lid- when I want it to.  Personally, this would be a nice option to be able to check or uncheck, so like if I'm watching a movie with other people over, I can close the lid and just have it on the secondary monitor without the computer screen to distract from the entertainment.

I have the same sleeping problem with my 2009 Mac mini and lion --- but i found the problem.

I turned off airport, and put it to sleep...and it went into sleep mode perfectly. No trouble, LED was pulsing.

    Weird stuff.

I am having the same problem on my Mac Pro. cjbriare's 'fix' by turning off my wireless before sleep worked for me. I hope Apple gets a fix out soon.

I agree, they need to patch this asap. as a large percentage of all Mac users use Wifi.

Same not-sleep issue here. I use the PleaseSleep app until Apple fixes the bug. http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/

Hi - yes i know this App, but its not good for me. I am Using my mac mini for recording TV Shows. Mac wake up automactically, records and normally after that go to sleep.

With Please Sleep you only can do a force sleeping. If Force Sleeping is 30 Min, and my tv show is 1 hour - you have a Problem :-) Please Sleep dont look for special App activity. Sure, becaue of the Force Feature.
