mtmfs: MTM fs Mount server failed...

After upgrading to Lion, my console is seeing an explosion of errors every second I have Time Machine turned on:

7/22/11 9:39:12.445 PM mtmfs: MTM fs Mount server failed to start because of error -1

7/22/11 9:39:13.946 PM mtmfs: MTM fs Mount server retrying ...

7/22/11 9:39:15.448 PM mtmfs: MTM fs Mount server failed to start because of too many retries

7/22/11 9:39:15.448 PM mtmfs: MTM fs Mount server failed, last error -1

7/22/11 9:39:15.450 PM com.apple.launchd: (com.apple.mtmfs[9149]) Exited with code: 99

7/22/11 9:39:15.450 PM com.apple.launchd: (com.apple.mtmfs) Throttling respawn: Will start in 3 seconds

There are no support articles on this, and the only description I've been able to find indicates this is a new feature of Lion for portables. From what I can tell, time machine is backing up to my Time Capsule are working, but I don't know how to prevent this error. Any thoughts or ideas?

mtmfs is the Mobile Time Machine File System, that handles Local snapshots, both making them and managing them (consolidating, deleting, etc). They're made on laptops running Lion whenever Time Machine is ON, whether you're in range of your Time Machine backup destination or not. These are completely separate from "normal" Time Machine backups to an external HD, Time Capsule, etc.

See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for more info on them. You'll also see a way there to turn them off if you want to, while continuing normal backups, until you can fix this problem.

I don't recall seeing that message, either in testing or the forums, but it sounds like something in OSX is damaged, so it tries to start, fails, then tries to start again, etc., as long as Time Machine is ON.

It's also possible there's a directory problem on your internal HD; you might try verifying your internal HD, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

If not, or if that doesn't help, you might try installing the 10.7.2 "combo" update, per Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX. If that doesn't help, either, you might want to reinstall Lion entirely.

Well thank you M. Pondini,

I just disablelocal Local Snapshots, and now it's fine.

The verification of my HD is ok.

Ah, good. Then you might try installing the 10.7.2 "combo" update, per Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX. If that doesn't help, either, you might want to reinstall Lion entirely, per the same link.

It seem my problem occure after the installation of the tool ntfs paragon

http://www.paragon-software.com/fr/home/ntfs-mac/

I don't know if that's help ?

I don't use it, and it certainly shouldn't cause a problem with OSX, but you never know. Be sure you have the most up-to-date version.

Do you see those messages only when the external NTFS volume is mounted? Or whether it's mounted or not?

Thanks for help.

Same here

Internal disk repaired.

If disable local Local Snapshots, stop errors.

I reinstalling OSX Lion and updates but stay same.

Paragon installed.

That's apparently the problem.

It may be that Paragon is fooling OSX into thinking a NTFS volume is really formatted for a Mac, so OSX is trying to manage Local snapshots on it, but can't.

Turning Local snapshots off is probably a temporary fix. See the blue box in #30 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.

But you need to report this to Paragon so they can fix whatever it is.

Dec 25, 2011 9:47 AM in response to Pondini

When i upgraded the MBP to lion, the version of Paragon was 9.0.x.

Now, for Lion, Paragon is to version 9.5 (re-installed).

I see "Macintosh\System\Library|Filesystems": all file are visible as directory. In new installation of Lion the file in "Macintosh\System\Library|Filesystems" are visible as package.

Installing Paragon not totally compatible with Lion, is it possible that the directory "Macintosh\System\Library|Filesystems" has been damaged?

The permission are repaired many times.

PS:

I'm sorry for my english 😊

I don't know what it means, but I don't see much difference in that folder between Snow Leopard and Lion.

Anything's possible. Run Verify Disk on your internal HD (not permissions), per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

But I think you'll probably do better checking with the folks a Paragon.

Not a problem. You're doing fine. 🙂

Problem resolved!

Installed Lion after re-formatting hard disk of MacBookPro.

Probably the problem results of installation of Lion or application Paragon too early (vers. 9.0.x).

Something has "dirtied" the file system.

A scan of hard disk, of Disk Utility, had shown "little mistakes" (words of Lion) corrected by the program.

For this ,not enough re-install Lion over existing installation, before the disk must be initialized. Then you can recover everything with the Migration Assistant of Lion: the problem is not on the data/application installed and therefore does not reappear.

There's a bit of work to do, but the problem is resolved.

Good work and good luck.
