not sure if this has to do with lion but it seems that even tho i have my set up correct, i no longer get the red badge with number of un-read emails.. i still hear my new mail chime but no red badge.. driving me crazy!

Silly question I know but is your mail going to your Inbox or being sent to other folders?
I'm not trying to be insulting. There are lots of people here with different experience levels.

One thing I would try would be to quit Mail and relaunch it but I am guessing you have already done that.
I'm afraid I am out of ideas - anyone else?
well i changed it from inbox to all mailboxes and a red badge of courage (as i like to call them) popped up for the reply notice from you

On some Macs Mail doesn't run the indexing after Lion has been installed. This behavior causes Mail to don't show the unread messages count right next to mailboxes AND it causes Mail to have a wrong count at the badge of Mails icon in the dock! The solution for this is:
1. Quit Mail if it’s open.
2. In ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData, delete any file that begins with “Envelope Index,” such as Envelope Index or Envelope Index-shm.
Your home Library folder is hidden by default. To display it, choose Finder > “Go to Folder” and then enter “~/Library.”
3. Open Mail.
Mail creates new Envelope Index files. This process may take a few minutes, depending on how many messages Mail is reindexing.

did you ever figure out how to get the Unread mail badge to re-apear. I am dealing with the same issue since ungrading to lion and icloud.

Worked ! Badge is now working. But, I am still not getting "New Message Sound" when email arrives.
Didn't work for me. Mail reindexed, but I still don't show a new message badge next to one of my inboxes, and the dock icon still does not reflect new mail in that box. Any other ideas?
This fixed my issue when it happened when I upgraded to Mavericks. Thanks!
