Is there any way to use the classic layout of Address Book from Snow Leopard, in Lion?
I tried running the Address Book app from Snow Leopard, but it gets an error when opening in Lion.
I think the new Address Book is ugly and far less functional than Leopard's.
An option to use the old layout and design would be MUCH appreciated!
I agree I don't like the address book either but I've not found anyway to change it back!
Yes agree Address Book in Lion is absolute disaster. Awful graphics, confusing counter-intuitive interface, huge reduction in functionality compared with Snow Leopard. What an embarrassment Apple.
I too have tried but Snow Leopard Address Book doesn't run in Lion. Help please anyone.

There is no way for me to use it withou the third pane.
Printing contacts continue a disaster.
Now in Lion, I can not use Address Book Reports because it is not supported.

Apple has created some amazing apps... Apps that are better, in most respects, than what you find on a PC and about as professional as apps get.. apps like Final Cut, Aperture, Garage Band and so many more.
An app that manages your time, contacts, and e-mail, is essential to most users, and they've done a good job with Mail for Lion. So why, with all their billions, do they not create a suite that rivals Outlook?
Why don't I just use Outlook Mac 2011? Because it doesn't play well with Apple's existing mail, calendar, and address book, and the connection with the upcoming iCloud and the existing MobileMe. MS has already stated that the calendar in Outlook Mac doesn't sync with MobileMe, so it's useless to me..... Nor do I want to go back to using Microsoft Applications.
Why don't I use Contacterizer or the others? Because I don't feel the quality is there, and many complain of bugs. Besides, something as vital as this, something that has to work with iCloud, should come from Apple. It would be nice if it was a part of iWork, but even if it weren't, I'd pay for it.
I don't think it would take a huge investment for Apple to create a product that rivaled Outlook... and of course, had the benefit of working with iCloud and Mobile me and the existing iCal, Mail, and Address Book.
How about it Steve Jobs? You've been a hero to most of us for as long as I can remember... so why not either make Address Book better or create the suite?

I agree. I need to read the notes while also being able to see the full list of groups. We need three pane view to do this. I can't work efficiently with the two pane limitation under Lion. Bring back Address Book three pane view Steve!!: Group > List > Card !
OH MY GOD WHAT HAS APPLE DONE?!?? address book is a disaster. i am stunned. losing the ability to see groups, people, and cards at the say time is a TOTAL FAIL. address book is dead to me. FIX THIS APPLE! i tolerate this stupid layout on the ipad, but on the desktop, why make it so hard to use?!? now i have to jump back and forth to view groups and individuals?!? it makes it impossible to sort people into groups, find people in groups! FIX THIS NOW!
For the most part I like Lion, but I agree iCal and the Address Book are a disaster! I've left feedback at the link above.
I have just restored SL and abandoned Lion as I could not stand the address book being a heavy user of the three pane functionality. The only way to resolve this at the moment is through a gimmicky solution: opening 2 instances of address book side by side.
It is really puzzling to see how Apple managed to make the already worse native application in Mac even more abysmal.
There is a substantial worsening of functionalities as highlighted time and time again in comments here, in Twitter and in all Lion reviews that care to include the address book (not all do!).
In address book I would be looking to resolve these issues:
1- Revert to original 3 pane view (was available in SL)
2-Allow creation of new contacts directly in a group (was available in SL)
3- Restore the counter present for every folder to give number of entries in a given group (now you have to scroll to the bottom of the group to see it) (was available in SL)
4- Restore the icon to distinguish entries between company/person (was available in SL)
5- Possibility of removing of alphabetical letter grouping of entries
6- Option to change leather skin (revert to SL clean look)
7-When you check to see what groups a contact belongs to (by hitting the Option key while the contact is selected), the groups used to be clearly highlighted in bright yellow in OSX 10.6, but now the font just slightly changes colour from black to dark blue.
and desirable improvements:
8-Allow font selection to facilitate reading and page display and reduce waste of space (was not available in SL)
9-Option to display contacts in table view for quick bulk editing (was not available in SL)
10-Show which (smart) group each contact belongs to on the contact’s page (was not available in SL)
11-Facilitate the creation of a new contact from the same company (i.e a colleague) without having to copy across most details (was not available in SL)
12-The find duplicates function is as bad as it was--no chance to see the duplicates and choose which to keep or whether to combine.
It really seems Apple has given over the app to develop to some kids that could not think of anything better than making a book view. There are, unfortunately, no serious apps to compensate for this in the app store, address book is a real disaster with Lion. So developers should quickly step in!
Last point: Apple has not even bothered to de-bug the previous version and replicated the same bug that has been around for over 2 years: if you want to print a set of contacts (company type) that belong to a group in list mode and you want to see the name of the person along with the company basic request!) you cannot do that. By selecting “Name” in the print dialog list, the “Introduced by” appears instead. This I have written to Apple about 2 years ago and told the “geniuses” countless times... Pathetic.
Please can we at least have the SL version of the address book back?

I fully agree that the Lion address book app is abominable and even worse to use than the one in SL and support the views above!
Even in SL address book was hard to use with different accounts and heavy use of groups as it was not visible which group a card belonged to, making it hard to sort out duplicates.
Ideally every card would show which groups/accounts it belongs to with the possibility to change that.
The SL address book looks like a gimmick from the early days of desktop computing and might be appropriate for casual/family users but is entirely unsuitable for corporate, let alone multi-server/account use!
Apple, we switched to Mac for corporate use, but we need appropriate tools to justify another Mac when a change of equipment is due! Those who want iPads will buy them but a notebook/desktop needs better than gimmick software (and actually I expect my iPhone to be able to duplicate the address book functionality of my notebook/desktop, but not by paring down the latter's!
I too would like to be able to use the 3 pane view of address book that was previously available in Snow Leopard. Is there any mechanism by which we can get back to that? I find the 2 pane view quite unproductive.
Contactizer Express or Pro has the 3 pane view. It works very fine and sync automatically with Address Book Lion 10.7.2
Someone suggested Contactizer. This is an outrageous proposition. It costs a wopping $60 - way more than the entire Mac Lion OS - just to get back a basic 3 pane functionality that was present for free in SL. The price of this app is unreasonable and we don't need much apart from just returning to the standard address book funcionalities of the previous OS. Hopefully a smart developer will offer a more reasonable alternative very shortly. There is a worrying trend emerging here: Apple seems to silently ditch one application after the other - after the abysmal new version of Final Cut, iWeb, now the address book and iCal have been decimated. And I dare say the Lion falls short of a major OS upgrade: a few new gimmicks at best we can easily live without. Long live SL.
