I have seen some screenshots of how to lock your screen in Mac OS X Lion, and was just wondering hos to do this.

This may help?

  • Launch “Keychain Access” located in /Applications/Utilities/
  • From the ‘Keychain Access’ menu, open Preferences
  • Select the checkbox next to “Show Status in Menu Bar”

Now that the lock menubar item is enabled, you’ll find a little lock icon in your menu bar. Once the menu item is enabled, just click on the lock icon and drag down to “Lock Screen” to immediately lock your Mac OS X desktop.

Much simpler way is provided here:

"To lock your screen quickly with fast user switching enabled, choose Login Window from the menu with your user name. Your applications will remain open and undisturbed, but your computer islocked."

They didn't give a picture so you may have trouble finding the so called "Login Window" to click on but its actually immediately to the left of the Search (spotlight) Icon on the top right. Its your name that's written to the left of this search icon and this name can be clicked to reveal the "Login Window" option. And that's it, clicking it locks your comp.

Using the "login window" method breaks active VPN connections. Locking the screen via the Keychain Access menubar item is a better solution IMO.

You can also use this keyboard command to sleep the screen(s):

"Control Shift Eject"

However, if you want password protection, you'll need to enable it in the Security & Privacy pref pane: "require password after sleep or screensaver begins."
