Library disappears from Lion

Hi,

After installing Lion, my Library folder in "user" folder disappeared. I check via Finder.

I can't find it.

Yet i haven't found any errors running my Mac since i installed Lion.

My Mac is a Macbook Pro mid 2010, core2duo and 4GB of RAM.

How can i get my Library folder back?

Thanks in advance, sorry for the bad English..

Mac OS X (10.7)

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run:

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

The user Library folder is in the same place but it's now invisible. I think this was done because new users were getting into trouble fiddling with it or storing documents in it.

There are several easy ways to make it accessible. First, follow Madison P's advice above to actually get to it - in the Finder, hold down the Option key while clicking the Go menu, and Library will appear there.

You can go into the Keyboard system preference pane and set a keyboard shortcut to access it in the future - I use command-option-L

Once the user Library folder is visible (it's temporary) in the Finder, you can use View>Customize Toolbar… and drag the Library icon into your toolbar. You can also drag the icon into the sidebar. All of these will give you permanent easy access to it in the future.

Finally, I'm sure someone with a good understanding of Unix will figure out a Terminal command to make the icon permanently visible again. In the meantime, Apple should add a Finder preference to do this - the default can be "invisible" but users should be able to make it visible.

Just use your imagination, thanks to the flexibility of the O/S, there are often many ways to do what at first look like problems.

Not sure I understand your question Eric.

There are 3 libraries on the computer, none of which should be altered without knowing exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish and how to do it.

To get to the 3 different libraries on your Mac:

  • Finder > Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > System > Library (This did not change with Lion)
  • Finder > Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > Library (This did not change with Lion)
  • Finder > Option Key + Go > Library (which is your User's library -- this is the only one that changed with Lion in that you use the option key to access it, or use Niel's terminal command above to make it not hidden)

NOTE TO EVERYONE OUT THERE. IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT YOUR LIBRARY

PERMANENTLY SHOWING IN YOUR USER FILE

AND YOU DRAG UP YOUR USER FILE TO BACK IT UP

YOUR LIBRARY ITEMS (INC ANY PREFS AND SHORTCUTS (e.g. quickeys) DOES NOT GET BACKED UP.

I went to my backups tonight to get a Quickeys shortcut and I have NO LIBRARY BACKED UP SINCE I USED SNOW LEOPARD.
