        Exposé back in Mountain Lion

I just fired up the only Mac i have with Lion (an old Mac Mini plugged into my TV).

Mine does not have "Group windows by application" - as shown in this article.

Does anyone else?  Is there a hack to turn it on?

If you have a Magic Mouse or a Trackpad you have Exposé.

David - can you please explain how I get Exposé with my Magic Mouse.

    Thanks.

Did you read the article you gave us the link to? It is saying that expose and that option in the menu is taken from a screenshot from Mountain Lion. How would anybody have it in Lion? If someone has it in a ML Developer's copy then they are not allowed to discuss it here, only in the developers forums. Nobody will make a hack if it's returning shortly in a new OS.

That's great news! This to me proves that it's always worth it to post this kind of thread - someone has to be listening, trolls notwithstanding.

I'm not crazy about all the stuff I've heard about Mountain Lion but this is a pretty great development if it comes through.

There are two videos and explanations...

Pete - thanks, no I didn't notice the Mountain Lion reference, just assumed that images were from a recent release - too much skimming the web...

Thanks David. It is helpful but didn't Expose show all windows opened in all Spaces

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment in this thread... there are TWO major drawbacks of Mission Control:

    1) I can't layout my desktops in a grid... it's this long line now.  I run 12 desktops, and had a wonderful system of moving up/down, left/right.  Nothing was too far away.  Now I have to remember to move 8 desktops to the right/left, or some other abomination. <sigh>

    2) I can't shuffle MULTIPLE individual windows between desktops.  The old (and much loved) spaces I could open it up, shuffle many windows around to where I wanted, then click the desktop I wanted and go there.  Simple, elegant, and oh so "Apple".  Mission Control certainly isn't anywhere near as slick. <sigh>

I delayed upgrading to Lion to get things like this shaken out, but I should have read the reviews before I took the plunge.

AT LEAST GIVE US THE OPTION TO KEEP USING SPACES... IT'S *MUCH* BETTER THAN MISSION CONTROL!

As already mentioned in this forum, one of the key features for "window shuffling efficiency" is being able to drag any window from any "space" (or desktop) to any other "space" (or desktop) - without having to switch to that desktop first. That's what I miss most in mission control.

It's only a partial solution, but TotalSpaces at least gives you back the old familiar grid format that Spaces used to have:

    totalspaces.binaryage.com

It's not as slick as Expose/Spaces together, but at least I'm not tearing my hair out.  The big missing piece is being able to open Spaces to see all of your desktops, and then open Expose to see all windows on all desktops.  Meh, I'm happy to be 90% back to what I'm used to... but seriously, why is Apple forcing us to compromise like this?

  • walter_l Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I can second this, TotalSpaces is brings back some of the experience and is better than nothing or missioncontrol on its own. if they could make the overview fill the wholescreen, that would be great.

Imagine how amazing that will be on the new Retina display, being able to zoom out and still read the small print !

I'm very optimistic about what i've seen of the UN-tickable "group windows by appliction" option for ML MC.

althought the loss of screenspace for the row of desktops is extremely irritating, it would probably be ok triggering expose and then swiping through the 'exposed' desktops.

If they think options clutter a UI, they could simply decide to group or not based on how crowded the expose screen becomes, or always group if number of applications >1

One more tweak I would like is Wrapround for swiping through desktops... that more fluid.. just contrinue in whichever direction is most comfortable till you find what you're after.

This brings back the Spaces functionality: http://totalspaces.binaryage.com/

I was _very_upset_ when Apple took it away, and am very glad that TotalSpaces brings it back. So, to say "thank you" I'm spreading the word.

Great software, works as expected, worth the $12.
