Am I overlooking something obvious?

Either your machine is to old to support it or in Finder > Preferences > Sidebar tab > it isn't checked to display.

Thanks. Just saw that on a different thread. I'd checked preferences where it isn't listed. So I'm a legacy! My Air's about 2 years old.
Yes, unfortunately the Macs that support it are basically mid-late 2009 and newer.
(good excuse to buy a new MBair?) 😉
