Unable to send mail using MobileMe after upgrading

Since upgrading to Lion I can no longer send an email using my MobileMe account from my MacBook Air (11"). Mail spins aways for several minutes trying to send the message before finally displaying a pop up that the mail couldn't be sent using a standard port. This worked fine in Snow Leopard.

Sending from my upgraded iMac on the same MobileMe account works fine. What is particularly odd is that I have the mail accounts set to sync across the machines using MobileMe. So the settings are identical. Both machines are connected to the same router (Airport Extreme). The iMac via Ethernet and the MacBook Air via Wifi.

When I run Mail's Connection Doctor it says Connection and login to the server succeeded. Yet of course it can't connect to send mail. I can receive MobileMe mail just fine.

Any ideas how to resolve this?

I hope your option helps others. I actually tried it before digging deeper. For some reason editing the port in the "edit smtp server list" route did not work in my situation. Even though I changed the port in this preference panel, I beleive the plist file was not changed. I'm glad it worked for you and I would suggest doing it your way first before doing anything more complicated.

Connecting to SMTP.me.com stalls, but smtp.mac.com does not. I did try selecting TLS certificates in Mail preferences but no change. I have an IMAP and POP account because if I delete my POP account I will lose (yes, with ONE S.....pet peeve) years of mail. My IMAP account seems to keep about a weeks of mail visible. Perhaps I dont know how to use it properly.

I have tried all of the fixes, reinstalled the account and it lasts momentarily. I think it needs an OS update.

This is how you fix this without worrying about ports and authentication and all that stuff that confuses people:

1. Open Mail.app, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts, select any MobileMe IMAP account, and click the minus at bottom of column to delete it.

2. Quit Mail.app. To make sure it is actually quit, go to  > Force Quit. Force Quit Mail.app.

3. Go to  > System preferences > Mail,Contacts,Calendars. Make sure your MobileMe account is on left side, select it, then check mark Mail & Notes on right side. Wait for it to stop spinning.

4. Re-open Mail.app, and send yourself an email. Your MobileMe mailbox will be repopulating, so it may take longer for the initial sending test to process.
