mail send button grayed out

The send button in mail is disabled (other buttons are fully operational). I can received mail, but can't send. I see others have had this problem, but suggested solution didn't work: to see if the Outgoing Server is marked "none". My Outgoing Server has the correct SMTP. Anymore suggestions how to fix this problem? Thank you.
