Is anyone else experiencing very choppy video after lion install? I have a 2009 MBP 2.5ghz 4gb ram 512mb vid card. MKV files on VLC are fine but my canon 7D, nikon D90 footage is extremely choppy. It used to be butter smooth in snow leopard.
Just curious if anyone else is experiencing it. I now regret upgrading so fast...

Same here, also on a 2009 MBP.
I am also having this problem, most posts are indicating it is a temporary phenomenon but after 2 days I am still seeing this problem.
I have an iMAC 27Inch, 3.1Ghz Intel Core i5, 4Gb RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1Gb.
It was running perfectly with Leopard, and the core crunching still appears to be responsive. But anything requiring fast graphics like Video, TV Tuner, Graphic/Video Editing and games are all choppy.
Updates for these apps have already come in, if I didn't know better I would guess it has something to do with Graphics optimisation.
Any help would be much appreciated.
FWIW, I use my 2010 Mac Mini for an HTPC connected to
my receiver and TV. I have watched BluRay level 1080p (.h264)
movies and have seen no jitter/jutter/stutter/choppiness
using PLEX (9.3.3). Also, have seen no issues with MPEG-2
DVD's with XBMC. iTunes store HD material plays back fine in
iTunes. And the 2010 Mini is by no means a graphics powerhouse.
You may want to try one of these applications instead of VLC.
Never use VLC much as I have found to have issues in the
past with content not playing properly, but playing just fine
on other software.
Is the choppy video in VLC or in QuickTime?
If the former, it's likely VLC is not yet optimized for Lion.
This was OSX quicklook preview (pressing space bar when the mov file was selected) and VLC and Quicktime
But my issue has resolved itself somehow. I didn't do anything, no updates etc, just restarted my mac a few times and next day it was fine... very strange. Maybe it just needed some time to index, run other background tasks.

Very likely so; should the issue return, check Activity Monitor for any processes actively using large amounts of CPU time.
Experiencing some choppiness in quicktime myself. Has nothing to do with indexing as the processor was at 0-2% during the choppiness. It is more similar to some sort of buffering glitch.
I'm on 13' MBP 2011 and I'm experiencing choppy videos on the web, youtube etc... every video online I watch the audio is fine but the video is choppy. I know it's not internet speed because it was after upgrading to lion, plus the videos will have already buffered and loaded the full video, and it's still choppy.
I have a 27' imac spring 2011. This machine is running lion default from the factory. This machine is wicked fast except quicktime gets chunky when i go full screen i get choppy video play back even from local content. I have tried VLC and there is no choppyness this has to be a quicktime issue.
Video performance (especially full screen video) has been terrible on my 2008 iMac and 2009 MacBook Pro after upgrading to Lion too. QuickTime, Flash, Silverlight, DivX, DVDs, even the animations between the login screen and desktop and opening LaunchPad and Mission Control are choppy. I see people blaming this on Spotlight indexing, but my drives finished indexing the day Lion was released a month ago, my computers have restarted several times, and I'm still having this problem. You know it's bad when I can't even watch the Apple promo videos on their own site in their browser on their OS and their hardware. 😟 Seriously, what's up with this?
I should mention, both my machines have 4 GB RAM and I also just did a clean install of Lion and it still hasn't solved the problem. Never had any problems in Snow Leopard.
You've got to have something running in the background using CPU power, as I don't see this at all on my 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo MBP w/4GB RAM set in "Better battery life" graphics mode.
Could you give an example of a video that gives you problems?
Didn't have any suspicious background processes, but at least I have a positive update: the video problem no longer happens on my iMac after a clean install, though there are still some choppy animations and slow response times in a few cases (see below). So I'm going to wipe my MacBook Pro again and try installing things one by one until the problem occurs again (assuming it does).
Here are the things that are still having problems:
Video from my Canon 5D Mark II camera (1080p, 30fps, mp4) is very choppy on my mid-2008 iMac with 4GB RAM. I tried reencoding it as both progressive and interlaced with MPEG Streamclip, and no improvement in either QuickLook or QuickTime. I rebooted and there was a slight improvement, but still not acceptable.
I booted into a Snow Leopard (10.6.8) volume that I had made with SuperDuper just before upgrading to Lion, and the exact same files play as smooth as silk -- beautiful.
Oddly, 1080i video recorded from my eyeTV 250-plus television receiver box (v.3.5.3) appears to be ok.
Note: There's nothing significant running in the background.
Just ran another test using 1080p mp4 video (see my msg above). Under Snow Leopard it plays it perfectly smoothly, even while Spotlight is indexing an external FW800 drive!
