Why oh why are screens now glossy?

Hi,

I can't believe how dumb I was buying a new MacBookPro some time ago without realizing HOW TERRIBLE the glossy screen can be! Indeed, what werer Apple engineers thinking of when they discarded the nice matte screen of years past? What, are we supposed to RESTRICT the use of the laptop to indoors and in the way CLOSE all windows? Doesn't that start to feel like it would be better to have a desktop type computer? Maybe a MAC-PRO???? Well, I have a MAC-PRO for my hard work and when I am in my office. Funny thing, I thought I'ld use the laptop while I was outside...after all that was what laptops were for - unless, that is, APPLE has made a major blunder with this silly, useless glossy screen!

I thought making such user oriented errors was MICROSOFT's domain and expertise; I was wrong!

I urge you guys to rethink and fix this...it is a REAL PROBLEM!! Do you have something I could put over the screen? To cover the MIRROR?

Thanks,

Juan

MAC PRO, Mac OS X (10.6.8), also have MacBook Pro

The quality of the image is not relevant. A laptop is a portable computer, should be usable under any environment. "Quality" is invisible when you have a ** screen that behaves more like a mirror than a computer display.

I used to have an older MacBookPro when the screens were matte. That was useful, anywhere.

When I needed a better and faster laptop I purchased a new MacBookPro and really never thought twice about the glossy display. Like many of you, I was swept byt the "better display quality propaganda". And, I trusted APPLE because in dealing with user interfaces they have always been right on the money, so to speak. It seems everyone makes mistakes and APPLE is eligible for one, after all the terrific products they have produced.

But that this mirror-like screen is a mistake, I challenge anyone with my previous argument. Its not an opinion, APPLE made a huge mistake here and should be called upon to rectify it... at least in future laptops!!

Your right and ALOT of people agree with you.

If you knew, and parted with a little more coin, you could have gotten the anti-glare display MacBook Pro instead.

I have a 17" anti-glare myself and it's one darn SWEET machine. The best laptop Apple has ever made.

At this point you can check out TechRestore, they likely can replace the glossy screen with a anti-glare and that would be the best bet as anti-glare films peal, bubble and look nasty, require constant replacement.

What i suspect is Apple plans on all touchscreen computers in the future, there is a better grade of glass/acrylic in the market that's available that's got anti-glare built in, but it's not being used.

The only reason I can think of is it's military application and since China makes Mac's that didn't sit well with certain companies as China copies everything, even Apple Stores!

Sorry for your mirror issue Juan. I Think we need an option, like thousands upon thousands of customers are demanding, that apple gives the customer an option between Glossy or Matte.

Kwopau has a good suggestion... buy a new MBP 15" with a matte option screen so you could have a apple laptop you could use. This laptop is the only one in the apple line that has the option for a Matte screen.... sadly.

This situation reminds me of a fairy tale, "Mirror Mirror on the wall who's the fairest one of all...?" as she talks to her mac glossy mirror laptop, putting her lipstick highlights on in the giant cosmetic powder compact... Come ON! Just a ridiculous situation.

Some people are professionals or at least like to use there computers more than an hour a DAY.... OUTSIDE? Forget it. It's so bad that people take photographs of there laptops and iMacs to SHOW the mirror effect.

My sympathy Juan, hopefully this problem of lack of consumer choice between glossy and matte will be corrected. We all know the mirror is a big issue. Love apple, but I also hate Glossy mirror display.
