Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Has anyone mentioned sound? Other forums are awash with sound problems. Some people have no sound at all. I have no sound on my external speakers. Tried everything, trashing prefs, resetting Audio Midi Controls, safe re-boot and so on. Internal speakers (Mac Pro tower) are functioning, the external speakers are not.

There's at least one guy who has mentioned sound on this thread. I, however, have not seen any problems with the audio subsystem.

i  have found some more bugs:

    Mail:

    - Sometimes contact photos do not appear.

    - Worst: Sometimes when dragging an image from a website to Mail icon on dock, the message opens. When you hit send, it does nothing... you hit again and again... nothing... again... nothing... some seconds later i hear the send sound. So the message has been sent 5 or 6 times, but the "compose message" box does not disapear after sending the e-mail. This only happens when dragging images from safari to Mail app, i dont understand why...

    Time capsule:

    - Much slower then before.

    - Time capsule icon stays on the desktop after time capsule finishes... (this happens 50% of the times a backup is made...).

    iTunes:

    - The latest version of itunes, wich support full screen, does not work correctly when you hit the top bar on full screen mode.

I still haven't seen the biggest bug I've found mentioned in this thread:

INSTALLING LION WILL CORRUPT YOUR WINDOWS PARTITION

You Will Lose EVERYTHING You Haven't Backed Up.

I don't know why the idiots at Apple couldn't resize just the OS X Partition to make room to install their (ironically named) "Recovery Partition", but they decided to just over-write the first 600MB or so of your BootCamp partition WITHOUT WARNING. MORONS!

No way - now System 7.5.3 that was a real buggy disaster. Lion is fine, but it does take a while (well a long while) to sort out the issues.

The problem I have is with applications not starting after sleep or when trying to eject time machine drive after sleep not ejecting.

Tonight after my system sat for 8 hours I attempted to start a song in iTunes where I left off and the controls would work but the music would not play.  I had to restart to get iTunes to start playing.

If I trying to eject my time machine drive it won't eject it just hangs the system and I have to power off and restart to get the drive to eject.

After reading all these post, I need to add my thoughts...

I did a new install of Lion (not update) and have had zero problems other than a couple of things I would like to change.  The only software I've had an issue with is AutoCAD for Mac.  To resolve that I had done enough research before loading Lion to know to make a bootable partition for my old SL system.  I boot to that if I have to run AutoCAD.  Actually I put it on my daughters MBP also and she loves it.

So with all of that said, is it an update issue versus a total reload?  Sorry, I didn't read every post so this may be covered.

I hope this helps some, that was the intention.  FYI, if you're running Time Machine and don't like Lion, just do a restore of your system back to SL - Time Machine is your freind!!!

Oh yeah, one more thing, before I updated to Lion I also updated my Adobe Master Collection to 5.5.  Haven't seen any issues with that yet either.  But that's a little bit more expensive than the OS upgrade.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and input.  It's a great help to those who are wondering what to do...

This isn't an Apple partitioning issue, it's a Windows MBR issue. And you really should back up everything before you perform OS surgery.

Now that's unusual. In testing around here we encountered problems with pretty much everything _except_ Mail. What error messages were you getting?

Ah! Someone else who remembers The Good Old Days™! System 7.5.3 is one of my candidates for Worst OS Ever. Yes, worse than Vista. Worse even than WinME. Worse than BOB... okay, maybe not worse than BOB. BOB was so bad that if anyone other than Melissa-soon-to-be-Mrs.-Gates had been project manager for it, that person would have been fired from Microsoft forthwith. (It's _good_ to date the boss...)

And then there was... Anyone else recall the feeling of panic the first time after you installed OS 8.whatever-it-was-which-installed-HFS+ and booted up from a non-HFS+ drive and couldn't find your files?

You new guys have _no_ idea what a _real_ OS disaster looks like. Lion has problems, no doubt about that, but let's not get carried away.

one more to add from my side:

Cisco Telepresence MOVI (former Tandberg MOVI) Video Conference Client can not access the builtin Camera. Checked other apps like Skype of Facetime and they work fine. Problem exists on a older MacBook (Macbook 4.1 Black) and a 2010 MacbookPro.

    Amen Brother (SBB)...

I remember when our ComputerVison Cadds 3 40MB disk platters got destroyed back in the early 80's.  Now that was a disaster...  Lion, just a few inconveniences!!!  Just be thankful we're still not using Atari 800XL's with a cassette deck for your backup.  Now those were the days...

One suggestions though, if people really don't like Lion go back to WIndows 7 and see how you feel after about 30 minutes.  I have to interact with those beasts every day.  I love my OSX and Lion when you look at it in perspective!!!
