Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

You have a corrupted Mail database. You need to fix that, or you're going to have problems even with Mail in SL. The usual fix is to select each mailbox and then select 'Rebuild' from the Mailbox menu. This will rebuild your database for that mailbox. You will have to do this for each mailbox, one at a time. You can _try_ to rebuild multiple mailboxes at the same time, but this has been known to cause problems, so I'd do things the slow but sure way. Besides, if you have corruption, it's almost certainly in just one mailbox, and this way you can find out which one; that'll be the one which refuses to rebuild or which takes a very long time to rebuild. If a mailbox refuses to rebuild you can try to export it, then delete it and reimport it. Worst case you could copy the mail out by hand from that mailbox to a _new_ mailbox. Do NOT copy it to an existing mailbox, you might corrupt that one, too. Once you have the mail corruption fixed, if that was your only problem with Lion you could try installing again.

The Versions and Auto Save features are an epic fail. Don't try to use network shares or you're gonna loose the old versions either on close (Snow Leopard share) or on disconnect (Time Capsule share).

The slogan "Save often" is now replaced by "Duplicate often". Too bad this also includes the Preview app.

Along with multiple issues covered by others here, I'm having a problem with connecting my MBP to an external monitor using a minidisplay to hdmi adapter.  The sound is jacked up and frequently goes to static, then back to picture, then static again.  Erratic at best.  I use this every day.  Now, it's not usable.  HORRIBLE.  How do I get a refund??

I've noticed a problem using LION with MS Word that never happened with Snow Leopard. When I open a Word doc, it opens that doc plus the last Word doc that I was using. I've tried to look for a setting or preference to change it, but haven't found anything. Anybody else noticed this or have a remedy for it?

That's called Resume, it's a Feature Not A Bug™, and you can turn it off by going to System Preferences/General and unchecking the 'restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' checkbox.

Another bug. Previous versions of a document stored on a sparse disk image freeze while loading in the Versions screen after clicking "Browse All Versions".

Another gripe. iTunes remembers to open directly into fullscreen each time I launch it while Safari does not.

Truthfully, I am so very unhappy with Lion. I can't use iPhoto, and I can't use Activity Monitor (even though I was having that problem before installing Lion). I was hoping that my problems were because I installed from a disk. Nope.

I am soo sad because I was looking forward to Lion. Mail works fine for me now.

At least I haven't uncovered all the problems YET!

Totally agreed! Bouncing e-mails is a BIG feature to me! Bring it back, Apple!

You realy are very vague. "oh i can't use iPhoto"... seriously?? We are like family here, what is really bothing you? Did some one forget to close the refrigerator door again?  Is it the idea that incandesent bulbs are becoming obsolete? You can tell us what is really bothering you? We will provide you with the support you need in this support community. We will even share your stories with our friends and their families. So tell us, what really is bothering you?

Ah... you were having some kind of problem which prevented you from using a basic system utility _before_ you updated, and not only did you not fix the problem, you made it worse by updating, and now you have additional problems, and you blame them on the update?!

May I suggest that boot off the Lion recovery partition (if it's available) or off a SL system disc, and run Disk Utility, most immediately, and then repair disk and repair permissions until you have no further problems show in DU? Indeed, if you can get hold of a copy of Drive Genius or Disk Warrior, that would be better.

Then, and only then, we can address any remaining problems.

If it started freezing spontaneously, the first thing I'd look at would be the hard drive. The second would be the motherboard. Third would be the power supply. Fourth woudl be the RAM. Fifth, well I'd put in a known working hard drive with a known working OS loaded and see what happened. What model iMac is it? How much RAM? What size monitor? What size hard drive? Which OS was installed prior to Lion, 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8? Or some other OS, upgrading from which is NOT supported by Apple? What happened when you restored from your backup? What happened when you did a clean install from your SL system disc? Which dealer is it with? Is it an Apple Store? Two days is an awful long time to not be able to diagnose _something_. Pulling down an iMac and swapping out parts to test known working good against possibly bad and eliminate components should be a matter of hours. I've ripped down enough of them in the past to know that. Certainly after two days we should have some idea as to what's wrong. And certainly I'd have booted from _my_ SL system disc and done an install and seen what happened. If the iMac still gives trouble when booted from SL, then it ain't a Lion problem...

I had more or less the same problem with my iMac (February 2010); it froze, it crashed, it everything since July the 20th, when I updated the system. It crash some 50 times, from app crashes, like Mail and Safari (I had to force them closed), to fatal errors, to dark screens that wouldn't move. You name it, I had it.

I called the support and they told me to shutdown the iMac and then restarting it pressing cmd+R and then they told me to use the Disc Utility option to check and repair hard drive permissions, which I did, and then re-instal the Lion, which I did.

Now it's much better. Since this morning I had only two crashes. On the other hand, I am not having any problems on the MBP so far.

I don't know if this is of any help. But if some else has any input on this, or a way to solve the crashing permanently it would be great.

    Thanks and cheers
