Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

I have two partitions: One with Lion and one with Snow Leopard. Inside the partition of Lion I am running a virtual drive with Windows 7.

Seriously Lion has some serious bugs. Compared to Snow Leopard.

    1. Itunes problems, I tried to connect my iPad to my itunes in Lion and kept getting errors, saying I need to authorize this computer, which is pretty hard since it is already authorized. I am re-installing my itunes now. Cross my fingers this fixes the problem.

    2. Wifi problems since I installed Lion. It will drop service and won't let me use my Proxy service. This works fine on Snow Leopard.

    3. Since I loaded Lion, it locks up, will not come out of sleep mode, and comes up on my screen with a big message and power button telling me to shut down my computer. Then I restart and it says my system has recovered from a serious error. It never did this on Snow Leopard.

    4. Back-ups are a nightmare. Very touchy. Driving me nuts. Mostly because it will go into sleep mode and wont wake up. I set it to never turn the screen off and then it locks up with the power button screen.

    5. Serioulsy, Apple Corporation, I know your product is cheaper than Windows 7, but I had ten times less problems with Windows 7 being all buggy on an initial release. I love my Mac, but I think they let this cat out of the bag a little too early. Next time, I will wait a few months before throwing on a new OS, because obviously Apple does not do a lot of beta testing with new products when they throw them out.

Logic Pro 8 hasn't been the shipping version for years now. I am totally unsurprised that it's not supported.

Update your software before installing Lion. That's what I plan to do. I don't have Lion on my home machine precisely because certain software is not supported in Lion. Once I have updated that software, then I'll consider Lion... if some of the more annoying bugs have been fixed by that time. (I must be able to bind properly to an Active Directory Domain. Lion has problems with some ADDs. This is a deal-breaker. There are others.)

If you don't plan on updating your software, you have just made a decision to not use Lion. Congratulations.

obviously Apple does not do a lot of beta testing with new products when they throw them out.

Ah... Lion was in internal beta testing for 18 months at Apple, and in external beta testing for a good chunk of a year. I would say that the information available to me indicates that your statement is incorrect.

As for your statments about backing up... well, Time Machine works. So do SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner.

As for the iTunes error, I suspect that you killed something when you set up your Lion partition. You might want to talk to Customer Service about that.

ONLY problem I have experienced with OS Lion is the inability of Mail to send messages, even though I have assiduously followed instructions re smpt etc. I was about to buy an iPad yesterday but figured that if Mail doesn't work on iMac, then it won't do so on iPad either. Apple Support wanted a bundle of money to resolve issue but I won't be blackmailed.

'Tis a pity that you have a problem with the facts, but whether or not you don't like 'em, they remain facts. Logic Pro 8 is not supported any more. It is completely unsurprising that it doesn't work with Lion. And getting annoyed with me won't help you in the least.

    Bye, now.

Sounds as though there's a SMTP problem. Here's how Mail should be configured to work with GMail:

go to Mail/Preferences/Accounts. Select the GMail account. You should see 'Google POP' accross the top. Below that should be the 'description', the name that Mail has for that account. You can call it anything you want. Below that is the GMail email address. You need the entire address if you want to avoid possible problems. Below that is the 'full name', the name that goes out when you send an email. This should not be blank unless you want trouble. Below that is the incoming mail server; that's pop.gmail.com, at least in the US. Other POP servers may work... outside the US. Below that is the username, just your user name, no @gmail.com, and below that your email password. You need to have a valid username and password to access the service. Below that is the pull-down menu for your SMTP server, the outgoing mail. Mail uses the description which was at the top of the account info page to point to the SMTP server. At the bottom of the pull-down menu is 'edit SMTP Server list'; select that to get to the server window. Select the line corresponding to your GMail account, wiht the proper description. You should see at the bottom of the page, in the Account Information box, your description and the server, which should be smtp.gmail.com. If you click on 'Advanced' you should see further info; GMail should be set to use the default ports (25, 465, 587) and SSL. Authentication should be by password, and you'll need your complete username, with @gmail.com this time, plus your password.

If that doesn't work, you need to check your web-bassed GMail account and verify that POP access is turned on. If there are still problems, check back.

If Mail in Lion does not work, it still works in iPad. I had that problem for a day with Mail and I went to my iPad and Mail worked as usual. And for Mail try this : Preferences > Accounts > SMTP > check your server name > and don't let is use just one server.

People should be patient. Think about how often there are small issues in programs; operating systems are on a much grander scale. Its not easy for Apple to forsee everthying on every system, they will be on top of it. I think Lion is great but I also have a few issues so far:

    1. Logging in doesn't always unlock mykeychain - also in Snow Leopard.

    2. Require password after screensaver or sleep always reverts to immediately.

    3. List of users is available after re-boot even though name and password is selected.

In regards to the original post, keep an eye on sites like Macupdate. Developers are constantly coming up with great apps like this one:

    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39583/application-state-cleaner

I don't need it so I haven't tried it. Also try "Private Browsing" mode for Safari.

    edit

Also, my 2009 17 "MBP runs better, faster and cooler.

It is very disapointing but I was forced to request refund on the OS Lion, my brand new MacBook Pro quad 4 i7, starts to run hot, I lost my word docs and many other problems. I just felt back to Windows Vista!!

Use your time machine back up and retore, go back to the fantastic Snow 10.6.8

I agree, this was a major operation and I understand that Lion works very well for a great many people including me. I only had a minor problem with Mail and I fixed it.
