Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Well, thought I would give you an update.....

After getting sick of the spinning beachball on my brand new Core i7 MBP I have bought two 4GB SIMMs from crucial (£49) and ugraded to 8GB and the machine is certainly a **** of a lot faster and no beachball yet.

Can't believe though that standard, new spec Mac bought only 3 weeks ago becomes efectively underpowered so quickly and requires a RAM upgrade so soon just by upgrading the OS.

When Microsoft brought out Win 7 it made BETTER use of the existing hardware, not made it worse.

Apple you have really cocked up this time.

I have two GB of RAM and my computer runs fine. But I do wish my computer had eight gigs of Ram. it must be Roaring!  Maybe one of the original memory chips was not good.

I originally installed 10.7 over 10.6 as an upgrade. It did have some glitches. I think what I did will cure 99% of everybody's problems.

    1) I backed up with Time Machine after the upgrade.

    2) Restarted holding the Option key to select my startup disk, started up from the Recovery HD (Hard Drive).

    3) Opened Disk Utility, erased my hard drive with the new 10.7 install on it.

    4) Reinstalled a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.7.

    5) After the install, restarted and restored my files from a Time Machine backup.

Since then there have been next to zero problems. I have always had the best results when doing a clean/fresh install. Unfortunately, you have to do an original upgrade from Apple to be able to reinstall Mac OS 10.7. You can't do a erase and install from the App Store original download.

Can you clarify?  Whats' an "original upgrade from Apple"?  Why cant you do this with the downloaded Lion file (which I saved) from the App Store?

Mac OS 10.7 Lion has to be downloaded first before installing. Then installed from the download. That is the original upgrade from Apple. For those of us who are more tech savvy, we can extract the installer, restore it to a flash drive from Disk Utility and start up and install from the flash drive. I didn't include this in my last post because it's not the recommended way to do things from Apple.

however, some you cannot update like office 04 when you use lion. if you want to know instead of trying hours for update use the lion tester.

To be clear, what you are saying is to is go through the App Mac OS X Lion upgrade to create the Recovery HD and then use Recovery HD to erase the original OS X partition and install OS X there, correct? Does the second install try to create an additional Recovery HD?

Yes, you have to do it that way. The clean/fresh install may overwrite the Recovery HD but I don't think it adds an additional one. Only one is needed anyway.

OK I am among the first crowd of users who upgrade to Lion.

    All I say is:

Why other windows suddenly go in front of my current active window? They just come out and my current windows is just being overlaid behind, but still remain active.

THIS IS ANNOYING, I haven't installed the HyperSpace, but all I can see is here that talking about the similar issue with me https://discussions.apple.com/message/15676165#15676165

Does anyone have ever encountered this?

    Thanks!
