Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

    Err...

for your first point, that's easily solved. System Preferences/Language & Text/Text. Uncheck the box next to tm.

for your second point, how are the sites 'incompatible', and could you perhaps supply the relevant URL? I went to <http://www.ocbc.com/global/main/index.shtm> without the slightest problems. Safari 5.1, Firefox 5. Safari 5.1 ships with Lion and is available for SL, Firefox is available for both Lion and SL.

If you want to downgrade to SL, you really should have a backup, then it's easy.

Yes I would really make sure you can't live with Lion before going back to SL. I susspect with a bit of trial and error you should be fine. Going back is not always as simple as it sounds even if you have TM backups. You need SL 10.6 disk, then restore system from TM, but if you import a lion back up 'settings' from TM then that causes issues. So you then have to update to 10.6.7 and set everything up again. I would wait until 10.7.1 and that will sort out a lot of problems. Never worth going backwards with technology.

the issue seems to be flash related, as far as we found out. see our blog entry on this issue: http://bit.ly/pNtLWS

also, if you want to downgrade - you can backup your machine, keeping all the files in /User/yourname/ - plus the Keychains and you are ready to go. the "Application Support" folder structure and format did not change from 10.6 to lion...

Yes Simon, I would agree with that. One thing about going back to Snow Leopard 10.6. I haven't tried this yet so, don't know if it will work but, I would like to hope that in 10.7 when we boot into recovery mode, we can restore from a Time Machine backup from that mode and not need the Snow Leopard DVD.

Another bug. After installing Lion, my MBP's battery status on the menu bar doesn't increase past 97-98% no matter how long it's been connected. While if I click on Show-Time instead of Show-Percentage it says (Charged).

Another bug. Not only am I getting 2 to 3 hours less battery life on my MBP with Lion, when I set the battery status to show the amount of time left it erratically jumps back and forth between times upto several times within a minute. E.g. 5:05 - 10 secs later - 4:33 - 25 secs later - 4:56, and so on.

Make sure Mail is quit.  Open finder.  Click Go from the toolbar while holding down "option".  Click on library.  In the library folder, go into your Mail folder.  In the mail folder there should be a file called Envelope Index.  Drag that file to your desktop.  Open mail and wait for it to reimport all your messages.

Another bug. When using Dictionary with the "All" tab selected, if you click on another word or link under any of the categories (or "reference sources") listed it will then only display the description of that word under that specific category instead of showing you its description under all the categories even though the tab remains set to "All".

Don't enable Trim support on your drive Iceman, I read many articles in regards to this, but basically a lot of the ssd drives have better native garbage collection than TRIM, and it actually significantly degrades your performance to enable it manually. I also wouldn't trust the enabler quite yet...

Your system has a hardware issue, and any software loaded on it won't make a difference.

I would be extremely happy that the hardware test detected an issue because most of the time it doesn't.

10.7 has nothing to do with hardware issues, however it makes heavier use of the existing hardware -- which can manifest latent hardware issues.

I used to see this happening a lot with the video card when people with OS 9 would upgrade to OS X.  The video card had a hardware issue with the hardware acceleration, however OS 9 rarely used hardware acceleration, whereas OS X used it all the time, so their system would give all sorts of video issues. OS X wasn't at fault, it was simply showing you an existing hardware issue and making you pay attention to it.

Be thankful that the hardware issue was detected and you didn't have to go through even more trouble with randomly occurring hardware issues.

As for the comments about Lion.. we're early adopters so there's always quirks to deal with. I've had several crashes with Mail and Safari, however when opening them back up they always save their stuff -- drafts and windows, so I'm fairly happy with it so far.  I won't recommend it to my customers yet until 10.7.1 or 10.7.2 though.

I think 4 GB will be fine depending on what you use the system for.

Can I add Energy Saver not working any more to the list. The setting in System Preferences clearly sets the Display to go to sleep after 10 minutes on power and on battery, and it always did with Snow Leopard, but it won't do it any more.

The display will not go to sleep on its own!

I'm not using Safari any more and am pleased to say that Firefox seems to be working smoothly for me.
