Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

The last problem I found is related to the Time Machine. All of a sudden, Time Machine started the backup process, the strange thing is that it would take one to two days to do the backup, a total of 200GB, as if I didn't have a backup of my iMac!

It didn't finish the backup (it stoped after a few hours) and I lost the backup I had before upgrading to Lion. It overwrote everything and now I am stuck with a brand new Time Machine backup that stretches back a few minutes.

That Cult of Mac article tells you that in order to "prepare your Mac for Lion and do it right" you have to download and use a bunch of freeware and shareware apps. I don't believe that to be necessary.

DO NOT TRY TO CREATE A BOOTABLE LION INSTALL DISK:

I notice a while backa few sites had a post about creating a Lion install disk that you could use to create a clean copy of Lion without installing Snow Leopard first. I was able to do it successfully. But, I thought I'd give you guys a heads up that it crashed my system. First I started having errors where my keyboard was deleting (in a text box much like this one) without me hitting delete. Then when I would go to new web pages, Safari was automatically adding pages to my reading list. Then when the computer finally froze and I had to restart, the real problems began. Most of the System Preferences were not accessible. Could not adjust sound. iTunes was trying to rebuild the xml file, with no success.. And finally, when I tried to use LaunchPad, the screen moved dissolved in weird horizontal lines, very slowly, making it completely useless. Other apps wouldn't open. Fortunately, I had already backed up everything, so I was fine. But I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS. I started with Snow Leopard as Apple suggested and then installed Lion. Everything is now a.o.k... Thought you guys might like to know.

THIS HOW I INSTALLED LION. ANYONE WITH ISSUES, THE PROPER HARDWARE AND THE KNOW-HOW - PLEASE REPEAT STEPS - IT'S NOT TOO LATE.

    1. Attach external, empty, FireWire drive and format it to "Extended (Journaled)" and name it "Clone", or whatever.

    2. Use Super Duper and clone Snow Leopard to it - which will be bootable. [or Lion if you've already installed it.] [Super Duper is free to download and free to make a clone. You need only to register and buy it if you would like it to do backups to the clone].

    3. Boot from "Clone" on external drive. [System Preferences, Startup Disk].

    4. Use the finder's "Get Info" feature to compare like folders on your clone and on the your Mac [Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.]. Make sure your important folders are the exact same size on both. [Make sure your OS X Lion Install package is there as well].

    5. Once you have verified all your important docs are there on the "Clone" which you are now booted from, go to Disk Utility and erase [format] your Mac's internal drive to Extended (Journaled), name it "Macintosh HD", or whatever.

    6. Now, while your booted from you clone, double-click your "OS X Lion Install" [the one on your clone]. When prompted, choose Macintosh HD as your install destination. Soon, you will have a clean copy of Lion on your Mac.

Before you start copying your important docs back to your Mac and installing apps, check out Lion on your Mac and see what kind of issues you have (if any). I also reset my PRAM and SMC before doing any thing else.

THROUGHOUT THIS AND ANY SIMILAR PROCESS, MAKE SURE YOU ARE PROTECTING YOUR IMPORTANT DOCS.

If I missed anything important - please speak up. If you agree, please "Like".

    Hello All,

This is a Huge Thread for OSX Lion...!! My expectation from OSX Lion have hit Rock Bottom. I was on eof the first Enthusiast to Download it as soon as it hit the App Stores. I have MBP 15in (2010) with i7 4GB RAM 500GB HDD SL10.6.8 (then Upgraded to The LION). Here are the Following Problems:

    1. The Machine Freezed 3 time while using Word (yes I have Macoffice Installed).

    2. Restarted However as the Disc is not there the Repair Utility could not be used.

    3. I went for a "Clean Install". Made a Installation Disk after Downloading LION 2nd Time.

    4. Even after the CLEAN INSTALL LION Freezes at the Login Window.

    5. After a HARD SHUTDOWN and Restart, the Spotlight seemed to Start Indexing again.

    5. Next Restart was smooth. However after Frezing again the 2nd time the Indexing Starts again after Rebooting.

However the MBP is Cool, quick. have no Problems apart from these FREEZES.

Can Somebody throw light on this?

    Thanks

    Regards

    NetBios & Workgroup Settings

Start up Lion. go to "NetworkPrefPane/Wi-Fi/Advanced/WINS" settings are all "blank". Re-enter NetBios name & Workgroup. Works for hours even through "Sleep".

[Restart] I have to go through the entire process all over again. Computer name set in the Sharing Pref Pane does not change.

Steps taken to resolve. "That don't work."

    1. Created a new /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/"preference.plist" by renaming current to .bak, to force a new preference.plist to be created after start up. Same done for the com.apple.smb.server.plist in the same location.

    2. Deleted the Network Interface "Wi-Fi" and started from scratch.

    3. Changed the computer name. Several different names used.

    4. Toggled On/Off SMB sharing in Sharing Pref Pane. Same with Share over AFP.

    5. Locked the Network Pref Pane. After [Restart] Network Pref Pane is unlocked "not asked for admin password". Every other lockable Pref Pane remains locked.

    6. Cleared all caches, ran all crons scripts, repaired permissions, and zapped the PRAM.

    7. Changed Network name. Several different names used.

    8. Toggled Back to my Mac On/Off.

    9. Toggled Firewall is On/Off.

    10. Toggled all sharing services On/Off.

Tried all the above several dozens of times in different sequences. This has been a 12 hr. trouble shoot so far, after upgrading to Lion 10.7.

    Any other suggestions ???

Really like Lion, and don't want to give up yet.......

Regarding the battery issue after Lion upgrade. Run "top -o cpu" see if you have a serivce called "AGAdminService". If you have the service chewing your CPU run the below command. I did this and now I get 6 to 8 hours of battery life. This is awesome. I travel so I need this.

    sudo launchctl unload -w/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.citrix.agadminservice.plist

You might want to check your VPN, because I suspect you just turned it off.

Seems strange that as the evidence grows of major shortcomings in the comptetence of Lion, that there are still some in denial. Great if it works for whatever you use your Mac for, but please don't make light of the real issues that others are having.

No one can tell me, for example, that any of these things, which have emerged since I upgraded yesterday, are "features" rather than significant bugs:

Complete loss of any closedown facility except manual shut down.

Inability of the latest version of Aperture even to open.

Inability of Finder to carry out the simplest tasks.

Complete hang up of all other apps on the machine as soon as one inoperable one is closed with "Force Quit".

    No access to Time Machine.

No access to my external USB HDD.

Inoperable USB network hub, because Lion has no driver for it, asks for the original installation disk, but then says it can no longer read it.

36 hours ago, everything I had worked flawlessly. The only change since then has been my regrettable decision to upgrade to Lion. My iMac has, in effect, ceased to be able to do almost everything I need it for, The problems have also robbed me of the ability to roll back the system to SL. There seems not even to be a version of Activity Monitor for Lion at present.

Threads like this have been running for at least a week now. Wish I had checked before making the upgrade.

    another bug:

everytime i restart my macbook, the sound is set to a default volume (about 50% of the volume  bar). I set it to maximum, and after a reboot... it's 50% again. Is this a bug or a feature?

    it didn't happened on SL.

    thanks,
