Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

I've had a particularly frustrating problem with an automated "shutdown" application called docakables which caused me to go into a continuous shutdown loop. Due to Lion recalling application states where it last left off, as soon as I logged into the computer it automatically shut itself down straight away. Unfortunately the reason for the problem did not  become apparent straight away and I spent several hours diagnosing the machine and even re-installing Lion did not fix it. The only way I eventually got around this problem was by starting the machine in safe mode (holding shift while switching on) and this cured the problem.

Yes, I found that starting in safe mode changed things a bit. It is very slow, however, both starting and running.

In safe mode I can open Aperture and open libraries within it. I can see thumbnails in the Browser, but no options will open a version I can edit. The metadata for each file is visible, but nothing I have tried will give me the functionality Apreture exists to provide. And this is under the very latest, allegedly Lion-compatible upgrade.

The fact that things like this improve in safe mode only help prove the extent of the problem. Agree also that the shutdown works in safe mode for me too.

    And Resume claims another victim.

You can turn Resume off temporarily by holding down the option key as you quit, or if you select restart or shut down from the Apple menu you can uncheck the little 'Reopen windows' box. That will kill Resume just that once. You can kill Resume permanently by going to System Preferences/General and unchecking the 'Restore windows' box.

    Good luck...

    My issues so far include:

    • WiFi connection constantly drops
    • VPN (via Cisco VPN in Network settings) constantly disconnects, even if you do manage to keep the WiFi connected
    • Can't put my user top-level folder in the 'Favorites' section of the Finder
    • Finder switches away from my selected 'List' view to 'Cover Flow' view if I navigate too many levels up, and doesn't go back without clicking with the trackpad
    • Things are seriously slow and I get the pinwheel all the time
    • Opening a single file now opens about 10 of the last files I viewed or edited with that application (especially Preview and Excel)

These are pretty common tasks, I'm not trying to do anything super advanced, I'm pretty surprised that these made it through any sort of testing that was done.  I would rather that they had missed the launch date and brought out a better product than put out this mess on time, but I guess Apple don't like to miss deadlines.

The WiFi and the VPN problem are due to the same known bug. That's being worked on.

You should be able to put your folder into the Favorites section, that's _not_ a known bug, more info please.

The Finder switching is not merely a known bug, but a known bug which goes back to at least Leopard on some machines. Don't hold your breath waiting for that one to be fixed, I know that I gave up on it a _long_ timne ago.

Your speed problem may be a low-memory issue, which should resolve itself once the inital index of your drive is complete. That index can take several hours. If it takes a day or more, you may have a corrupt index and you have to kill the index (by marking your volume private in Spotlight) and then start the index process again (unless you don't want to use Spotlight, as Spotlight won't work without the index.)

The opening multiple files is A Feature, Not A Bug. Turn off Resume, as noted earlier in the thread, and this will go away.

I too seem to be having the same pinwheel problem. It pauses all the time on everyday things. Also awakening from screen saver takes an eterninty, like it have gone into a trance. Mosaic screen saver not right too. This has not been tested properly.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if my Resume issue was related to what you described previously, turns out it was.  I'm surprised this was a feature, I guess for me there is no use-case where that is a benefit.

As for the Finder issue, no amount of dragging my folder from Users into the Favorites section will put it in Favorites.  Also, when I try to select it in the Finder Preferences menu under Sidebar, it selects while the trackpad is depressed, and then automatically unchecks itself.  I'd also be interested to know the use-case where having all of my files displayed in a single folder view is useful, but that is a different Finder issue all together.

    Thanks again.

I upgraded to Lion.  Logic Express stopped working.  In 2 days, mycomputer stopped working.  I have a White screen with apple logo and a littlething goes round and round.  I took my computer to an apple store. They are saying that I need a new hard drive.  It cost $220.00 + tax andthey will not return the original hard drive.  Apple is not taking anyresponsibility for the computer failure.  I would not trust Apple as Iused to be.

I will not recommend anyone to use OS-X Lion

You're not alone in not being able to see any reason for Resume.

Your not being able to put a folder into the Sidebar is a definite problem, you'll have to get onto Tech Support about that, 'cause it's _supposed_ to Just Work™.

The single-view thing is something brought over from iDevices, like Resume and Autosave. Someone thought that it was a Good Thing To Have™ on a iPad, so that makes it a good thing to have on a Mac. Evidence to contrary was ignored.

Unfortunately that sounds awfully as though you had a hard drive failure. If the drive is beyond the warranty, that's it... though $220 is a little high for replacing a drive. Hard drives die. There are exactly two kinds of hard drives, the ones which have failed, and the ones which haven't failed... yet. They all fail sooner or later. That's why it's a good idea to have a full backup.

What kind of machine do you have? Do you have access to another Apple Store? The drive is yours and I cannot think of a reason for a repair shop to keep it. That would keep you from attempting to recover data from the original drive. If that is really the policy and your machine is out of warranty, I would seek a 3rd party repair shop. Was there any unsual noise coming from your system leading up to when your system stopped working?

I gotta say I was really looking forward to Lion but it's been more heartache than it's worth.  I have one of the 11" Airs (not the brand new one) and it was lightning fast with SL.  Now things just seem sluggish.  Mail, extrememly slow.  When I wake from sleep, my network is not connected, and I get the beach ball half the time until it takes about 3 mins for the computer to unfreeze.  Spaces and mission control are slow.  I wish I could downgrade to SL until they fix this upgrade months from now.  So mad.

I found a issue not sure if its been mentioned. Did not really see it reading through the thread.

    1. Open a folder to view my .ARW files (raw). Try adjusting the thumbnail image size via the "icon size" slider and the thumbnail goes away and the generic raw icon shows. THis happens when making it smaller or larger, maybe 3 sizes on the slider will show the thumbnail of the file, the rest will just show the generic icon.

Never had this issue before, until Lion.

This is on a brand new Mac i7.

    what gives?

Changing Genre in itunes. In S/L if you typed the first couple of characters it would fill in the rest. Now it doesn't.
