Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

I've also noticed that "clear" key doesn't work in Calculator widget. But I found a solution. Check http://deepitpro.com/en/articles/Calculator/info/ for instructions.

Don't know if anyone's dealt with this in the thread, but with Lion the relationship between iPhoto and the MobileMe Gallery seems to have reached a level best described as hysterics. Try adding pictures to an existing MobileMe gallery through iPhoto. After you drag one picture in, iPhoto snaps back to its 'home' page (i.e., all your pictures, ever) and so you have to click on your name under Web in the navbar again to get the albums in the galleries back and then you have to find the album you were loading pictures into and drop the next one in. This wouldn't be too bad, I suppose, though very un-Apple-like, except for the fact that iPhoto then seems to go crazy and triplicates or quadruples each new picture, loads all the copies onto the gallery album, or, in some cases, ignores the picture(s) entirely. Whoops - this is bad for an OS supposedly so image and cloud-oriented. Oh, and the sound still hasn't returned to my external speakers since installing Lion. Just thought I'd mention that.

I have had similar problem with both my MBP (mid 2008) anf Mini Server. The issue was very longer boot sequences, if any - often as result after a sleep. I have reinstalled the computers several times and have perhaps a workaround.

I used to plug in a cable and install Lion. But this times I disconnected the cable, using only wi-fi and after installing, I deleted the Automatic location setting in network preferences and created a new. So far the comæuters are working without problems...and my fingers are crossed.

I am having similar problems with annoying crashes of Aperture and general slowness in performance.  I am frustrated with the repeated appearance of the rotating beach ball.  I am running a Mac Pro and Mackbook Pro both of which performed much better without glitches and slowness with Snow Leopard.  I am disappointed in this release and with the significant number of problems posted here and other places it is clear that there is much bug fixing to do.  With the long beta testing period, you do expect more.  I hope it is not Apple's Vista......count me disappointed, frustrated and wishing that I had not bought Lion before this thing is fixed.  It is not king of the jungle just yet although I like many of the new features.

I'm having a bug with Automator in Lion. I get this error when using a "Get Selected Finder Items" after a "Take Screenshot" script: Conversion from Image to Files/Folders failed - 1 error -[_NSArrayM descriptorType]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x40099e1e0. Anyone else come across this or know a fix?

I have a BRAND NEW MBA 11" , which came with Lion out-of-the-box , so no "errors" can be attributed to bad installation

    my gripes:

-"Restore windows when quitting and re-opening..."  DOES NOT WORK.  I chose to DISABLE restore globally, and as a redundancy i've also disabled it on a per-application basis.... neither is effective.

-Can't wake from sleep by tapping or moving mousepad.  Must actually click

-More than a few times, it has failed to wake from sleep... necessitating reboot

-Takes longer to re-connect to wifi when waking from sleep.  This is not symptomatic of this MBA... as my mid-2010 MBP upgraded to Lion now exhibits the same problem (when before it woke and connected instantly)

-Trackpad freezes or lags occasionally.  (memory and cpu NOT full)

i cant say i enjoy this so far

One problem plus one annoyance in Lion:

    1) PROBLEM: When dragging large amounts of files from one folder to the next (ie a 3D image sequence), you used to be asked if you wanted to replace duplicate files, or only move over the files that were different.... something you absolutely need in the media world. Now it only offers the ability 'replace' or 'keep both' or 'stop'... which is not acceptable. Many times while rendering 3D sequences you need to keep adding files into your sequence folder as the 3D render progresses. It's nice to simply grab them all and only have it copy over the new files. But that is no longer possible.

    2) ANNOYANCE: Spotlight.... you used to be able to choose "Content" or "Filename". That option is no longer available. So now I'm stuck with this monster list of files with content containing word(s) x, y and or z...... when I know that if I could look by filename it would simply bring up the 8 or 9 files that match the search.... totally annoying on a machine that has well over 10TB of files on it.

I guess since I'm going to be losing iDisk in a few months, I might as well make plans. I've started utilizing flickr and other hosting sites. They don't have the same problems as WebKit browsers have with iDisk.

Arghh!!! So frustrated. After purchasing a new iMac 27" (mid 2011 version) and upgrading software immediately after release to Lion OS, I have had nothing but problems. I made the mistake of also installing it on my MBP Unibody. Essentially the problem is when i'm using any web browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Opera). If I'm veiwing a page that has any Flash video content the browser not only freezes but also the entire OS freezes. Mouse function continues only.  I'm left with no other choice but to Restart by holding down the On switch.

Also when viewing folders and scrolling in Finder, onscreen text becomes jaggered and unreadable.

But my biggerst gripe, is that working with Flash content or viewing Flash video (example: help/instruction videos) across the entire Adobe Design Suite also causes OS to freeze unexpectadly.

I hope Apple come up with a Fix soon. Im so dissapointed and do not understand how it is that these issues could not have been resolved before release.

Have you checked your version of Flash Player? The latest version puts a preference pane in the System Preferences. You can downlaod at http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Also, do you have Java installed on the new machines - it's a separate download http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421

Thanks for suggestions 62bMoose. I had high hopes it might have helped. I had already downloaded the new Java SE 6 and installed, but after checking I did not have the new Beta Update for Flash installed. After doing this and restarting computer, I'm unfortunately finding that i still am having the same problem-mainly Flash video content causing whole system to freeze.

I can't open PDF files at all after upgrading my Macbook to Lion !

This bug is really annoying...I tried anything to fix it:

    deleting Preview.plist

    manually reinstalling Preview.app

    NO-WAY*

Hope a bugfix release comes asap...in the meantime http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/

Or if any of you have more wiz to try...please let me know :-)

have a nice day everybody !
