Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

    Hi there again!

After some weeks (and after 5 re-installs of Lion so far) i found the following things out:

You cant install Lion on a RAID 0. It worked for every X sience Apple invented it. Now it doesnt anymore. Thanks Apple - needed to get a faster HD (thx to WD for their new Velociraptor series.. )

All you get is a cryptic message but you can install it. But afterwards it doesnt run well (this was why my gfx-performance was so **** poor).

After the latest clean-install on my all-new HD it seems to work now - but in many cases performance is absolutely poor. FPS in WOW is still poor. In some corners it dropps down do 10-15 fps which is unplayable (compared to my 70-120 fps in SL). On my 8-Core Mac Pro with an 5870 and 16Gig RAM...

TimeMachine got me a message this morning that my backup volume is full. After 3 Weeks of normal use. My new HD is filled with 300Gig - Backup Volume is 700Gig. Lastet in SL for over a year - in Lion 3 weeks.

And what annoyes my most in Super-Duper-Lion:

This dammit window-resizing from every side. I simply want to drag a window around and got it resized from the top instead of dragging. Why cant Apple simply add a Control-Panel where you can set from which side you are able to resize a window?

So much to my Problems in Lion.

    Greeting from germany

    Kellni

I am not happy either.  I am just figuring out this Support Community features, and accidentally opened up a new topic, while all I wanted was to reply here!  So, I agree Lion may not be the King of the OS Beasts.....Here are my complaints:

So I would LOVE to add my frustrations I have been having with Lion.

    1.  If I shut down the MacBook Pro without shutting down all open apps, when I log back in, Lion automatically opens them back up.  It's like I never shut down the computer.  Problem is that it then hangs up, I cannot even get the force window to open.  I have to hold the power button to shut it off again.

    2.  It seems as if iPhoto doesn't like Lion.  Runs extremely slow, and often hangs up and have to force shut down iPhoto.

    3.  If I have Safari open, and Chrome or Firefox at the same time, Lion hates that.  Runs extremely slow.

    4.  I have to use Disk Utiltiy about every other day!  What is up with this?

Is there a way to revert back to Snow Leopard?  Thanks everyone!!

You have encountered Resume. You can turn it off (temporarily) by clicking on the checkbox which shows up in the restart/shut down dialog box. You can also hold down the shift key on startup. Depending on how much memory you have and how fast your hard disk is it may take a while to reload all your apps.

    2.  It seems as if iPhoto doesn't like Lion.  Runs extremely slow, and often hangs up and have to force shut down iPhoto.

That's not normal. You might want to rebuild your iPhoto index.

    3.  If I have Safari open, and Chrome or Firefox at the same time, Lion hates that.  Runs extremely slow.

Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all use a lot of memory. If you are low on RAM you _will_ experience slowdowns in Lion. The official minimum RAM is 2 GB. 4 GB works better, but even with 4 GB if you have two or three browsers open at the same time, or some other memory-hog app, you will see slowdowns. The cure is to add RAM or not to open multiple RAM hog apps at the same time.

    4.  I have to use Disk Utiltiy about every other day!  What is up with this?

That's not normal, either. Have you repaired the disk or just permissions? What error messages are you getting?

It is trivial to go back to SL, if you have a backup. It's a lot more trouble if you don't. Do you have a full, bootable, clone backup? How about a Time Machine Backup?

Yes I have TM backups.  Thank you for all of your replies!  I am just not smart enought to decipher all of the Linux permission errors.  I do use the repair disk selection.  Maybe I just need to make a Genius appointment.  I was also told by someone else about the memory issues with having multiple browsers open at the same time.  So you guys are all teaching me today!!    I appreciate this so very much.  I'll check into my iPhoto issues as well.  This is great feedback!!!

Well after my initial "upgrade" I have reinstalled Lion on three seperate occasions now. Each time I have had the freeze after logging in, it is not freezing on every occasion though and that is the annoying thing. Lion also seems sluggish whereas SL was pretty nippy.

TBH this is the first upgrade that I have ever had problems with and I have used all the OS's since system 7 so I'm not one of the new bread of users.

I have finally gave up on Lion and have done a clean install of SL and my computer "just works" as is described by Apple in there adverts. IMHO this update is to cater for the iPad and iPhone users that are thinking of switching to Apple and not for the mainstream users. There is no way I could put this OS on our production Mac, I just couldn't put up with the hassle.

I've had a pretty up beat opinion about lion because I don't have all the problems but every now and then I can't scroll left without it going back a page and the most annoying thing ever: about once every two weeks the log in screen freezes or has a rainbow wheel and forces me to repeatily turn off and on the mac untill I get lucky. Hopefully Apple fixes these annoyances before they blame it on Steve Jobs leaving the company...

    I've noticed several problems-

computer runs very slowly.  Lots of colored wheels.  I've tried every disk repair I know.  None improves performance.

Quicktime, preview, iCal & Contacts no longer open

Firefox works poorly at best.  Mostly not at all

    Several apps won't open/work

    Battery life shortened by 1/2

Any suggestions on how to go back to the old OS?  Just reload it from the disk?

And how is Lion an improvement over the previous version?  Looks like vaporware to me.

How much RAM do you have on your laptop? 2GB is minimum... but I'd never go for that. 4GB is the bare minimum I'd be running. Also... how many apps do you have open at a time? That always makes a difference. I'm running Lion on a MBP 2.3Ghz i7 with 8GB RAM and I've not noticed any issues that you have listed. I'm guessing you are low on RAM. And the decreased battery life has to do with the OS swapping off the hard drive non-stop.

quick one, i am having all these issues too, however i made a Time Machine backup just before installing Lion.

Can I remove Lion with the Time Machine and go back to what I had?

Or is this type of change one that cannot be reversed ?

    thanks

What does Resume have to do with scrolling back to online banking?  I thought Resume was a feature to re-open an application in the same state it was quit.  With my online bank if I quit Safari with a bank screen open then I have to relogin when I re-open Safari.  Surely all banks would be the same.  Would appreciate your clarification so that I can understand the risk.

I find that Grab, the utilities screenshot program Apple includes standard now takes poor quality screen grabs since I upgraded to Lion instead of the clear, crisp ones when I was using Snow Leopard. Is there a setting that I can change now? Or is that it? I have downloaded another screenshot program but still, I liked the ease of use Grab provided.

    Cheers

I agree. This program has been giving me problems since day 1...The spinning ball comes in with Libre Office, Mail, all browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome), it makes it simply a ridiculous program to use...Flash...Big problems, too many bugs and I don't see Apple really trying to solve this...So, after reading that I am not the only one with so many issues I'm going back to Snow Leopard...

We have an iMac desktop that we purchased late last year as a Christmas gift.  Had no issues with snow leopard.  Since Lion was downloaded last Saturday (august 27).  This is mostly a family device used for middle school homework, email and web browsing.  We have had issues with safari pages not loading or loading very slowly.  We also have had challenges wit charter.net email functionality.  Have not cracked into the MS Office for Mac but expect that there will be challenges.

My wife is inquiring why I did this to the family.  I'm sending this on the new iPad I got for my birthday in August so have been off the iMac since.  My son has a MacBook that we bought in the spring. There's no way to we'll upgrade to lion for him until the bugs are fixed.

woof woof--sent from the family doghouse.  I was blindly following the reputation and the hype.
