Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Agree and all your points and would like to highlight Mail and iCal lost a lot of ease of use and productivty in Lion.

I'm with you on this. It's as if someone looked at Mail and iCal and said: "Now, how can we make this a lot more complicated?" I think there is a misconception by programmers that we consumers have as much time as they do to learn all the new tricks they have incorporated into an upgrade. Many of which, to be frank, were not that useful at all in Lion.

Something as frustrating as in text edit (which i use for it's quick loading time for jotting down notes etc) the "save as" function is not available anymore???????

Not withstanding the other problems i've encounted, such as

    -Macbookpro charger intermittently not recognised

-Macbook battery also occasionally not recognised (even with resetting the SMC PRAM and NVRAM)

    -some MP3's

    - Plus my MBP is running so hot now it burns my thighs....... kind of makes my "laptop" a useless defunct object if i can only use it sitting it on a desk. Great Laptop turns into Desktop...... whats gonna happen next is apples future OS going to turn my computer into a commodore 64? or maybe just into a potato?

I wish i could go on Safari and hunt this damned Lion to extinction!!!!!!!!!!!

The "save as" function disappeared as from Lion 10.7. Also in Pages there is no more "save as".  Lion saves it for you automatically.

    Hi Steve,

I to will join the duff lion. (AKA MAC VISTA)

I hate the save version idea.

I know what it is supposed to do ( Stop you losing whole documents) and that is fine but I usually want to save a copy of say pages doc to somewhere else to keep things neat which before I would use the simple SAVEAS option but not I just get save version without the option to choose where save it. OK I can duplicate the file and then choose where to save the file. Soooo Loooong winded)

Why can't they give the SAVE AS option without having to duplicating first.

The full screen idea is about time but if for example you set the zoom in pages to say 150% and then click the full screen option the size reverts back to normal. (why?)

Mail has now stopped adding sent emails to the sent folder?

Had my first major crash just black screen and cursor. I wouldn't mind if I was working it hard but just a bit of WP and browsers open. (imac i7 8gb)

I also get the spinning wheel even though I am not doing anything taxing.

If I could go back to Snow Leopard knowing that things would not get messed up I would do so now and wait until Lion gets out of Beta stage of development. perhaps sometime in late 2012

If Apple wants to know how to get this right, start with the point of getting everything working and then add the nice fluffy stuff.

This is such a poor implementation of an operatting system I can only guess that it must have been in collaboration with microsoft VISTA team.

I really hope that Apple get his sorted quickly instead of moving on to the next project.

There is so much more but I will leave that to others.

"......is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard......"

If you have used TimeMachine put the Snow leopard DVD in and boot on it and use the restore from TimeMachine option.  Opps forgote you might want to use the DiskUtils to format your drive.

If you have used other backup software check the manual for that software.

If you have not used any backup then your out of luck.

ALL WAY USE BACKUP, and for roleback I think TimeMachine is the easeys as it's included as a restore program on all install disc's.

I too have found many problems with Lion. I am hoping that I will not have to go back to Snow Leopard. I do have everything backed up. While I also have many of the problems that folks have talked about, my biggest problems are:

    1. The computer no longer automatically connects to my wireless router. Not only do I have to do it manually, it always asks for the WEP password and then it takes as much as seven minutes to connect. With Snow Leopard it was automatic and never took more than a few seconds.

    2. The machine no longer goes to sleep.

    3. The machine does not shutdown. And yes, I have tried SMC reset and the other advice that I have seen in this forum.

If these problems are solved, I will stay with Lion. I do like some of the features that it offers.

Anyone who has gotten to the point of reading or posting to this thread should try the following:

    Read:

         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199

-- and go through ALL the steps outlined. I wish I had been smart/patient enought to do that when I first installed Lion -- instead I did it piecemeal over the following months. As a result I wasted a lot of time being annoyed.

My Lion installation (on a 2008 MBP) now is faster and more stable than my preceding Snow Leopard installation, and my battery life is unchanged from Snow Leopard.

Your mileage may vary, but if everyone followed the precription in the linked technote, this serial tale of woe would be a lot shorter.

    Seriously.

    Read the note.

    Follow all the directions.

Odds are, you will like the results.

    Hi Kirk,

was very interested in the link, I am considering the upgrade.  It did not appear to mention anything specfically about osx lion, more troubleshooting once problems occur.  I just want to make sure this was the article you intended.

    Thanks for your help!

I hope Kirk's link works for some of you.  My main probelm is with Time Capsule not working anymore and, having spent 4.5 hours on the phone so far to Apple support, they still haven't resolved the problem.  We have tried many of the things in the link.  The latest position is that Apple support want me to stop using the legacy FileVault saying that "it may be incompatible with Time Capsule under Lion" but they couldn't guarantee the conversion would keep my valuable data intact.  So, I've been out and spent GBP 85.00 on a Western Digital backup drive to backup my data before we try this - but this kinda defeats the object of having a Time Capsule!  We haven't yet got onto the problems of really slow speed of my MacBool Pro now, or the jumpy video playback in iTunes.  Very, very unimpressed.  This will be the last Mac I ever buy - it's just not industrial strength, nor is the support.

OK, so I'm a couple weeks into using Lion and am getting increasingly frustrated with the new problems popping out.

I tried it for a month and it nearly drove me nuts. At first it seemed merely annoying but as the weeks passed, deeper system-related issues began to emerge. In the end I did something I never thought I would have to do with a MacOS: I went back. Greetings from the much better world of Snow Leopard.

    Problems with Lion so far.............none.

I read these posts with interest and can  see a distinct pattern of equipment and software failure which appears to associated with either poor maintenance or electronic malfunction. People who installed Lion as soon as it hit the App Store without checking the condition of their computers, in some cases not bothering to back up, and not bothering to check which programs would no longer be compatible. Apple made it quite clear in all documentation that PPC apps would no longer be supported and for anybody who uses a computer there are fairly simple guidelines to keep your macnine in good order. Some claim to have installed Lion, had problems, changed back to SL and the problem was stil there. Lions fault? I don't think so. Probably your hard drive was ready to crash and with the demands you put on your computer, any system update was going to push it over the edge, let alone a brand new system. Dodgy graphic cards, RAM, logic boards etc. It can happen to any computer. Apples are very user friendly, thats why people buy them, but they are not immune to technical issues if you never repair permissions, run DiskWarrior from time to time, check the healt of your hard drive with one of the many recommended programs and don't push your storage space to the limit. I have installed Lion on about thirty computers now, for family and friends, without one issue. Just readied the computers for the change. No problems AT ALL. I don't work for Apple as Tom will probably fly in and claim, I learnt a lot from reading and listening to the experienced people here on the forum and not being stubborn about things. For the very small percentage of people who still believe that these forums represent all Apple users and not just the few with issues, read, listen, ask, and learn. Then you will find your computing experiences will be a lot less troublesome.

The jury is still out, but resetting my PRAM appears to have solved most of the Lion uupgrade problems that I was experiencing. Your mileage may vary, but the two biggest problems (WIfI and speed) went away after I reset PRAM.

Really? In what documentation? Not everybody spends time reading Apple discussion websites and a lot of users probably had no idea that Lion would not run their PPC applications. It would have cost Apple nothing to put a warning notice in the Lion download itself, advising users that installing Lion would mean their PPC applications wouldn't work.

So I'd be interested to know in which documentation Apple informed ALL USERS about this?
