Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

It's ok Steve. I know what a flash drive is, and what a usb drive is, but I was having a hard time picturing one in the shape of a disk. All good now.

    Thanks

Booting from a USB /Drive// actually works very well since once the system is up it doesn't seem to access the drive much!

The plan is to get it fully installed and evaluate properly if I stay on SL or carry on with Lion.

I've never had to do any thing like this with Mac OSX before, unfortunatly I assumed everything  normally just works and  improves  after an upgrade.

I can perhaps clone over the internal Lion disk. at some point if they dont get around to fixing Dual screen support in Lion.

Spaces and Expose all present and correct, it's lighting fast :-)

its October and Lion is still majorly broke:

SMB is broke, USB is broke, Safari is so jacked up that i considering redoing a long list of macs just so i can have one stable week of no issues.

This is mac's version of Vista. One of the most unstable releases Apple has published in a long while.  There is a long list of issues.  Some of the new concepts are interesting but there should have been far more testing on this revision before releasing.

Most frustraiting in Safari is re-opening secure pages (even with Private browsing, and that is wierd) - I had my web accounts locked after "whatever" unsuccesfull attempts without even trying.

Hi - I am sooo disappointed with Lion.  I have recently upgraded from Leopard to Lion and prior to this was a PC user my entire life.  Up until now, I have been overwhelmingly impressed with the reliability and system performance.  But then I bought a new MAC Book Pro 15 inch with LION.  WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!

Apple becomes the new Nanny State!

MAC Designers have become to clever by half and I think are in danger of losing serious users of MAC - when I say serious, I mean those that use their MAC for real work other than flicking through Face Book pages....those that have to scroll through hundred page documents line by line....scroll through 1500 row spreadsheets and might occassionaly use LinkedIn!

    Problems I encounter...

    Mail crashes;

    Every time I open the computer it opens all the last opened screen, despite me checking each time when closing not to open the screen [strangley - if I close an application such as Excel, it means that I have finished that task...my brain is not so soft as yet that I need to be reminded that Excel exists and that I was working on a 25MB business plan];

Crashes with BBC I-Player - Leopard did

Microsoft Office 2011 crashes - it did not on Leopard

All My Files Folder - why do I need to see 20,000 spreadsheets that are not organised into folders...is this supposed to look elegant?

And for the finale - the blinking scroll bar is now made so subtle that one end-up faffing around trying to find it.  It is as if old scroll bar in Leopard has upset the harmony of the screen.

Can they not have an option that allows serious users that need the sensitivity of the scroll bar to somehow activate a more useful and practical version of the scroll bar, albeit slightly less elegant, or will that upset too many people at Apple?

    Rant over

I empathise with some of your problems, and I agree that Lion seems at first to be a "too smart for its own sake" OS. The only thing I can say is that it grows on you and what at first seem anomalies do start to make some kind of sense eventually. But of course that is not Apple's normal way and I understand your frustrations.

The scroll bar is being phased out, or at least its importance is being minimised, and that's because the Magic Mouse and the new trackpad have taken over with one-finger scrolling anywhere on the open window (up and down, sideways). I honestly have to say I'm glad to see the end of scroll bars, because when you're working fast, with multiple applications open, the time taken to move the cursor up to a scroll bar and scroll and then bring it back to what you were doing, accumulates into a considerable amount of time that could be better spent on more important things.

I have never totally understood the function of All My Files, but at least if you need a fast look at what pdfs, images or spreadsheets you've been working on, and you don't want to use Spotlight (which is still not what it should be) it can work sometimes to your favour.

I don't get any of the crashes you mention (though I wish the same could be said of ios5) but I am frustrated by smaller things. For instance, I'm writing this post, and say my finger accidentally brushes the surface of the mouse, this page will slide off to the right and when I bring it back all the text I've just typed will have disappeared. You may think this is a rare occurrence, but it certainly is not, at least not for me.

In Mail, the new "conversation" layout makes sense - until you accidentally reply to the wrong person in a threeway conversation, not noticing that the wrong message is highlighted, and this can have embarrassing results.

But overall, Lion is starting to make sense to me, and to be fair it has many clever improvements that maybe don't get mentioned much in these forums.

I like Lion very much. Perhaps you just need some one to help you or show you how to do things. There is some learning involved. It works great for me with the slight exception of having to force quit Mail ocasionaally if I shut the computer down. Perhaps you should give it a chance, and just try to play with it. I think it brings a lot of improvements and has a lot to offer. You could even try to get some lessons at your local Apple Store. Don't focus on the things you can't do but instead learn how to do appreciate the benefits of the new features. I would give you lessons, but I am busy with school, and work; and my time is not free if you know what I mean. Perhaps just a piece of paper and just write down the things you do like on it... and post it here or if there is a specific question, send it this way.
