Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

    So two chorces;

    1) Mac, have eveything in one place "Launchpad"

    2) Windows have eveything in categorise (folders and links to folders in menus)

Not quite. Everything is an abstraction at some level. Launchpad is just a single place to access all of the user-level applications that could be found on the system in /Applications or elsewhere. It allows you to organize the applications in whatever way makes sense for you. The actual layout of the applications in the file system doesn't get changed. That way, any updates from Apple or any 3rd parties will work properly.

As developers get more sophisticated you will likely see them start setting up default Launchpad groups the same way some of them put apps in the Dock and the same way installers adjust the Windows Start menu.

Two really BAD issues regarding Mac OSX Lion bug me ever since - and they are not adressed at all.

Both of these are just harmless console warnings. I have them both and my system runs perfectly. You may have other Adobe-related issues, but that is Adobe's problem.

I recently went back to SL after a frustrating period with Lion.  Although some aspects have improved, some issues still linger in my iMac. My biggest problem seems to be an inability to install software upgrades--Apple and non-Apple upgrades.  Whenever I download an upgrade, I get a message saying the download was either tampered with or corrupted during the downloading. My wife's laptop and my iMac began displaying this message ever since we installed Lion. While she's still using Lion, I'm not, and still both of us are having the same problem.  In addition, we're having similar problems with our new iPhones (4S) and iPads (1 and 2), which are all using the lastest OS. We've not been able to update our Apps since installing the new OS.  Argh!

Strangely enough, I've been trying to solve a similar problem for someone else. There's some tips you might try in this thread:

If you have any questions, though, please start a new thread for your problem rather than posting in that one.

You have a permissions problem, and before you're like "Oh that's easy to fix -- just start-up from the recovery partition and repair permissions" -- you might need to try harder than that : ( Repairing permissions using the recovery partition didn't seem to fix my problem -- I had to use a third-party app called Cocktail to successfully repair permissions and THAT fixed those corrupted zip files, unmountable images etc. problems.

Cocktail is well worth the amount. It does more than just repair permissions too. It's a swiss-army-knife of stuff.

What is 'stuff'? So too does Onyx (free) TinkerTool (free) and many others. I have found Onyx to be better than Coctail for all OSs to date and as I said, it is free and highly recommended, also works on 'stuff'. But then again, I have never had a use for any of these programs under Lion to date.

    Cheers

ps. Thought this old thread was dead. Thanks so much for reviving it. Not!!!

I feel so frustrated about this slider not working.
Am I the only one? Why wasn't it solved in the first update?

I'm still using Snow Leopard at work, and I feel it so much natural and friendly.

i too am regretting downloading Lion. Ive allways been a mac snob, preaching that everything is so smooth and reliable. I after spending an  couple of hours on a design  in Photoshop went to print it  only for Photoshop to crash. I thought it was a fluke , so tried again . Then tried to open saved photoshop files . Photoshop crashes everytime. Illustrator ok. As  my computer is basically for design using mainly Photoshop i hope this matter resolves very quickly. Is this the future, now Steve Jobs is no longer with us, is this  the start of decline with Apple?

              Best of luck.        Tom

[btw, am now on 10.7.3 and so far so good.]

That's not really Apple's fault. That's Adobe's. Adobe is like this really stuck up company that wants to be as spoiled as Apple -- the only problem is that their products are more bloated and dodgy than Apple's.

On the topic of Problem STILL found with Lion, these are what I noticed, that HASN'T been fixed, since they were discovered in 10.7.0:

    • Mail still crashes Mission Control! Yep, they STILL haven't fixed it! If you do a quickpreview of any attachment in Apple Mail and then full-screen view it, Mission Control just DIES. It won't go back to normal -- until you quit Mail. I've reported this problem before -- has yet to be fixed. How such a glaring problem can be allowed to persist... geez, who knows. But then again when you think of those Foxconn workers......... (tongue in cheek).

and errr... well what do you know -- seems they've fixed all the other bugs, but I'll have to wait and see if my Launchpad icons are still messing up!

You may be the only one. Mine works. Always did. You might have a permissions problem -- try repairing permissions on your harddisk.

Do you also have .dmg files that fail/refuse to mount? Or that mount and then unmount immediately?

From one quick look, Cocktail still looks much more polished, but I guess that's what these nice n' fancy websites do for a product.

I've used Cocktail for years and it's been great. The developers add more and more features and tools to it too -- it's an ever-evolving product.

On the other hand, Onyx's website isn't helping sell the product. It may well be a great product, but the message their product page is sending just doesn't feel 'right'. I'll give it a pass and stick to what I know I can trust. Sides, I already paid for Cocktail : P

Thanks for the info though, a lot of others will find it very useful!
