Q: Problems With Lion (Found So Far).....

I have been using Lion for 2 days now and have come up against a number of issues which are ranging from the annoying to the downright frustrating.  If anyone has any answers I would be very grateful.  Also is it possible to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard as my new quad core i7 15" MacBook Pro is running like a dog after the upgrade!!!

  • Cannot put my MacMini to sleep any more (question asked in article "Mac Mini (2010 Version) Not Sleeping After Lion Upgrade"
  • Safari always opens with last page viewed, regardless of settings selected (can be very embarrassing if you know what I mean)
  • Mail seems to decide when it is going to get new emails and will show no new mails for some time even though my iPhone picks them up.
  • Flash no longer works properly - going to a site that wants to use the web cam gives me the Flash confirmation screen but will not let me select anything (Flash removed and reinstalled but still no go).
  • Spinning beach ball every time I try to launch a new application or do anything mildly taxing (this is on a Core i7 15" MacBook Pro with 4 Gb Ram.

Before the upgrade everything was fine and the MacBook Pro was the fastest Mac I had ever used, now it is running slower than my old 13" MacBook.

Is this Apple's 'Vista'?

Any help or suggestions (including how to go back) would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

    Not true

I have front row running on lion.

I kept a copy of app before migration and ran the utility linked elsewhere on this board.

I have even updated to latest version of itunes (x.4) and it still works.

    :-)

AARGH - was sending a long reply and accidentally swiped on my trackpad so my previous page was shown and bang - my unfinished reply was gone.

I will write again soon but have lost the will a little since this happened.

Main thing I wanted to say was thanks for all the comments that are being posted - please keep them coming.

Right – second attempt at my reply (this time typed in Open Office and pasted so I won't lose the text again).

I have been reading all the comments that have come in overnight and would like to make a few responses:

    • Thank you to everyone who has     contributed.  I noted the comment from the poster who said that I     was inciting “me to” comments.  That was my aim.  I needed to     see that it wasn't just me and that others were experiencing similar     issues.  I don't know if Apple read these forums (you would hope     they do) and so the more people who confirm they are experiencing     similar problems the better as it could prompt a fix.  So, please     keep them coming.

    • The poster who said that I need     more RAM – I only bought my MacBook Pro two weeks ago and, under     Snow Leopard, it ran like s**t of a shovel.  Why would moving to the     latest OS mean that it is now obsolete and needs upgrading – this     is not acceptable especially after I have just spent £1500 on a     laptop.

    • Thank you to the poster who     suggested turning off resume in System Prefs/General (also had to     set remembered documents to 'none').  At last, Safari opens with my     home page.

To be clear I am (was) a huge apple fan.  I have an iPhone 4, and iPad and two Macs (the MBP and the Mini).  I have converted many friends to the Mac and use a PC onlywhen I have to (for work).  However this upgrade has left a very nasty taste in my mouth and seems to have gone against all the things that make Apple great.

Please keep the comments coming – we are Apple's best assets and they have to know that their new OS is currently not fit for purpose.

Making an early upgrade to Lion was clearly a mistake. Pretty much all of the software that I use on a daily basis doesn't run including: Mindjet Mindmanager; Conceptdraw Mindmap; Focusrite Pro 40 interface; Ardour etc. This seems to have caught the suppliers out as well as they have been issuing statements to their users AFTER release - all a bit too late then. At present I can't see any quick solution but to remove Lion and wait a couple of weeks/months until issues are fixed. Most (but not all) appear to relate to products that use Java and even with this loaded from the Apple website just crash on startup.

I appreciate that any major upgrade is difficult but with so many suppliers caught out if appears that something has gone badly wrong this time.

My Canon colour lazer printer no longer works! Apparently Canon expect to release a driver within 3 months!!!! Its a new printer less than 3 months old, why are the drivers not ready at the release of the Lion why have Apple released a product that means people cant even print without buying a new printer??? Not good!!

Hai Steve....good to see this kind of thread.

So far Lion works pretty well....but only installed it for now about 24 hours ago......so not tested prefectly.

The only thing I've noticed is strange graphical behaviour with Aperture......It loads a photo and after a second ofso the colours are 'greying' out. Who else having this kind of graphical problem(s).

And that is Apple's fault of when third parties create their software or drivers? Sorry, to hear that. How do you have your printer connected ... wired or wireless....  (also why not create your own thread, you will get quicker and better responses.) What type of Canon lazer printer do you have? More info... and using your own thread for your support is what i would suggest.

I had a few glitches with the upgrade install. I figured I might have these so, I did a backup of the download BEFORE INSTALLING. When I downloaded the upgrade, before installing I navigated to Applications folder and locate "Install Mac OSX.app". Right click on it and click Show Package Contents. Open Contents and then SharedSupport. Then I copied the file "InstallESD.dmg" to my Desktop. I can take this file and restore it with Disk Utility to a flash drive and start up from the flash drive and reinstall or more importantly do an erase and install. I did this and it worked fine. The glitches have gone and it's smooth sailing.

I cant seem to plug in ANY external display using any of my adaptors without the system freezing and having to have a hard reset. I'm not alone either:

Very interesting comment- I upgraded (??) to Lion and also run mindjet on my phone as well as my comp. Thinking back to what happened today...

I was in mindmap then exited out to send a text message. When I went into my contacts, ALL my contacts were gone. Perhaps thats the link I have been trying to figure out as to why all my contacts disappeared

Problem with NVIDIA graphics driver here. If the system switches to Nvidia GT 330M automatically the cursor gets pixeled and some applications crash. Wake up crashes if lid was closed and an Nvidia App was running.

I am waiting for a fix.

But hey, this is a normal behaviour to a early adopter

@Apple: Work with Lion is great. Thanks!
