Please give us a little more information as to what you precisely mean by "doesn't recognize any files" so we can better help you.
Does Finder see the DVD drive?
Does FInder show any of the filenames of the files on the DVD?
Or does no App recognize the files and know what ot do with them if yo double click on them??
or ???
Steve
Finder sees the DVD drive, but not the filenames on the DVD. All of my DVD's show up on my desktop as an "Untitled dvd". When you double click on it, it says "Recordable dvd" with nothing on the dvd at all. These are known good dvd's that I've used many times in the last few days before upgrading to Lion. Thank you for your help!
Well I can't say that any brilliant ideas immediately come to mind.
But does thia happen for say DVDs with movies on them or other types of data?
Can it handle CD's correctly??
Do you have bootable backup of 10.6 that you could try toconfirm that the Drive still really works??
Steve
Hi Mike ,
did you manage to fix the problem as i'm in the same boat as you..

Movie DVD's play just fine. I don't own any photo cd's - Just DVD's so I can't try a cd to see if it recognizes any image files on CD rather than a DVD. I still have the original install 10.6 version on it from when I purchased my IMAC. My drive finds the install 10.6 perfectly with no issues. It seems like it only has issues with all of my image DVD's. Odd thing... Thank you for trying to help!
Sincerely,
Mike Zortman
Nothing yet - I'm hoping Apple comes out with an update to repair the issue or I will have to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6. I'll keep you posted if I learn anything!
I think you've confirmed that the basic physical DVD drive is OK.
I dug out some DVDs with image made via "Burn xx times to Disc" under Finder -> File.
They are all ok.
They include jpgs and raw images in the DVD root and in folders on the DVD.
Are your DVDs prepared in some other manner??
Sort of grasping at straws, but if we can in anyway narrow things down it might help.
Steve
I called Apple Care and was advised to unplug the computer, wait a minute and re-boot. Then shut off the power and wait 10 seconds. Then, hold down option / command / p / r keys and turn the power back on. You should hear 2 sounds, let off the keys - This should reset your dvd drive. It didn't fix my issue, but it may work for you. I'm taking my mac to the genious bar tonight as they are positive my dvd drive died at the same time that I installed Lion. Coincidence....
Thanks Mike ,
Tried it but it still hasn't worked BUT I can watch a dvd ????????? I just will not let me open a dvd with photos on... cd yes... might have to ring apple .. hope you have luck with yours
Tara
After 3 trips to the Apple store this week, the issue is still unresolved. The photo dvd's open just fine on Snow Leopard, but are not recognized at all on Lion. I'm guessing since the DVD's were originally burned on a PC, they will no longer work. After finding out that PowerPC is no longer recognized by Lion and I can no longer use Nikon NX2 (Photo editing software), I will be re-installing Snow Leopard. According to the Apple store in Lancaster, Pa. there is no refund available for my Lion purchase. I have a ton of photo DVD's, most of which will not open since I've only recently switched to an IMAC system. It has made me think about returning to the PC world. I'm VERY unhappy with these developments and I really need to re-think my computer situation. I don't do much else besides photography. My purchases and time spent with my IMAC has aparently been a great waste.
I'm having the same issue with data DVDs in OS X Lion. I have the latest updates installed. The worst part is that my iMac with 10.6 (with latest updates) can read the same DVD without any issues. This an absolutely annoying problem to have, is anyone at apple support reading these threads, because I doubt it is only 3 people that are having this issue?!
I'm also having the same issue. Some of my previously burnt DVDs are not recognised on mu iMac running Lion yet strangely they work fine on my wifes Macbook running lion.
I have a brand new iMac and it doesn't recognize any dvd's, data on it or not. Tech support, if you can get through are absolutely useless. They use flash cards from what I can tell and have no tech savvy at all.
As a new Apple user I'm not impressed. A little searching shows this to be a very common problem yet Apple still insists on the old "shut off the power and wait 10 seconds. Then, hold down option / command / p / r keys and turn the power back on. You should hear 2 sounds, let off the keys - This should reset your dvd drive" trick.
They gave me the number to a repair center. I've had the unit for a week. They should send me a new one instead of me having to drive an hour to the repair center.
Simmilar issue. Finder displays files and folders only at root of CD. Other words: Finder shows every folder on CD as empty. I can see every file in Terminal using command like ls /Volumes/my_disc/subfolder. Additionally I can't open CD at all from Finder's sidebar - CD is grayed out there. I can open CD only from the Desktop.
CD is burned using Nero 7 at Windows. CD worked at Snow Leopard, stopped working after upgrade to Lion. I don't have this problem with discs burned using CDBurnerXP. File system used on disks makes no difference, it's just like Nero - doesn't work anymore vs. CDBurnerXP - still works after upgrade.
Hope it can help a little to catch a bug.
What more can I say....you guys have pretty much covered it. I'm having the same issue. Was using the DVD with photos the morning before installing Lion. Now it sees the DVD, gradually brings some of the folders on line, then some of the folder contents and after a half hour I can start editing those. But half the folders don't show up at all. Common Apple....don't let us down!
