I am attempting to scan B/W docs for eventual OCR by Acrobat, at 600 dpi (because sometimes small print requires it).
No matter which settings I use, scan to text, to black & white, etc., scan to tiff or pdf, the final result is an all-black page.
Any suggestions?

I'm having scanning issues too since Lion.
Neither poster mentions what brand and model of scanner they have. I would immediately suspect the scanner driver of being incompatible with Lion. It could be a 32/64 bit issue, or perhaps the drivers have some legacy PPC code buried somewhere (Rosetta). Best bet would be to contact your scanner manufacturer and ask if they have tested their drivers with Lion or if they plan to support Lion.
Making some progress.
Even though my scanner (Epson Perfection 610) has maximum 600 dpi (1200 interpolated) actual resolution, I tried scanning at 300 with Text setting and it worked. Then I tried 400 and that worked as well, but settings of 600 and 720 result in all-black image.
At least I can scan at 400 dpi, which will have to do for the time being.
P.S.: I obtained the latest Lion-compatible driver from Epson. This is the default scan software built into Lion.
I have a HP Photosmart C4380. My problem is I can't select an area to scan: either I have to scan the whole glass, or nothing. Plus the scans don't go to the designated scan destination (Adobe Photoshop Elements, in this case).
I have been unable to scan into Acrobat using Lion scanning. When I choose Create PDF from Scanner I cannot even set scanning area and the scanner scans only a bit of the top of the page. I must scan to PDF using the scanner software (or into Preview and save the PDF), then open the PDF with Acrobat to perform OCR.
I suspect a problem with Adobe software.
Which TWAIN driver do you use?
I've got 6180 Perfection and don't' have this issue under Lion. Mine scans OK.
I never use Epson's utilities. Try scanning in Apple's Image Capture utility, It works great and is easier to use! Just add your scanner as a device. Unlike Epson's utility, it remembers my settings from previous sessions.
I've run it all the way up to 3200 dpi. All works.

Absolutley.
You can resize your scan area in the settings pane on right, there is a checkbox under the resolution drop down, called "Use Custom Size" - check it.
Also, make sure your AutoSelection drop down is set to OFF.
Careful: Image Capture settings menus change based upon what scanner brand you have, so you may not see the same choisces as I do. All depends on TWAIN driver.

In the scan dialog (it's labeled "Epson Perfection 610" there is a checkbox "Use custom size" right above the "Size" pulldown. Checking that box lets me enter custom width and height, and I can then move the selection around with the cursor.

BTW, if you right click your scanner device on left, you should get a choice to assign actions to scanner buttons,
It's not very powerful as it can only launch applications and not assign scripts or jobs, but I set all buttons to launch Image Capture, so when I start the scanner and push any button, Image Capture comes right up and scans a preview of my flatbed.
I think Image Capture works faster than Epson's utility. Just my observation

FYI, actually I was wrong about this. In the Print & Scan preference pane, with the scanner selected, I have selected from the pulldown "Open scanner window" and the scanner control box that opens is named "Epson Perfection 610," the name of my scanner.
As I recall, when I first installed the scanner in the Print & Scan prefs pane, I think I recall it selecting a TWAIN SANE driver, but I cannot be sure about that.
Anyway, in the Print & Scan Prefs pane one can select a different application to open when one presses the scanner's "Scan Button," but that would probably vary depending on the particular scanner info.

My Image Capture remembers the last scan location even after upgrade to Lion. It always has.
After Image Capture launch, all fields and drop down menus are exactly the way how they were when quitting the application, including the destination.
Yours doesn't?
Scan is all black even though pre-scan okay
