Why I have to buy Lion Server and Lion for $83.98???

I want to upgrade my MAC OS X Server 10.6.8 to Lion Server......

But the App store insists I buy Lion as well... AND it has tried to charge me $83.98 for it.... (The Australian dollar is closely on parity with US dollar)..

So.. I already downloaded Lion.... and installed on my imac.... now I want to upgrade my server.. why do I have to buy lion again??? And why so expensive compared to the rest of the world??

Firstly, you are not speaking to Apple here. Secondly, Apple doesn't set the price differentials, your government does in the form of tariffs and/or duties. Then there are exchange rate differences. So complain to them.

The USD price of Lion is $30.00. The USD price of Lion Server is $50.00. Total is $80 USD.

If you don't wish to spend the money then don't upgrade. But if you need or want Lion Server then you also need Lion as they work together. Lion Server is not a free-standing OS as was Snow Leopard Server.

You don't have to buy it, no-one is forcing you too, so don't

Thanks Drunark,

I discovered other people have the same problem and Apple are apparently refunding the extra cost paid by mistake through their system.

My problem is not so much the extra $30... it's the potential for catastrophe.....

However, having downloaded, I am now facing a screen that is attempting to install lion in place of OSX Server 10.6.8 and surely if I do that, I will lose all of the server's settings and potentially the various websites and email/user accounts... a potential disaster is imminent if I proceed and the install process going from the old server to the new is far from smooth ... or intuitive... unless you count "oh **** no.. I'm not doing that!" as intuitive.

Do I install Lion... or not?

If your unsure, and not working in a test environment (bad idea) - make sure you read this document first.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/resources/documentation.html

There is an upgrade and migration link up the top as a pdf.

But even with an update - I would suggest you get an external HD and use Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your Server to the External.

Worst case scenario - it fails you restore the clone.

If you backup your current installation you can go back, it's really that simple.

For those that don't see the prompt to buy Lion + Lion Server again, there's no need to respond because you aren't having this issue and any obvious input, is just that.. obvious.

For those with this issue, Apple Care won't be able help you because it's a download issue and not an install issue and they suggested to contact the Mac App Store (iTunes Store) support for assistance. Sadly it's e-mail only and probably will take some time. You could try a clean install of SLS to upgrade to LS, but that still might not work. Other than attempting the pain of wasting a day to do a fresh install before the upgrade, I've tried logging out and back in with the Mac Store, created a second admin account and used the same AppleID and both still prompted me to Buy Lion+Lion server again.

For those that haven't clicked on the buy, I still hit an issue that preventing me from downloading the Lion Server after the 4GB Lion image downloaded. You will probably have to request the refund if you attempted this, but guessing you still won't be able to install. Also if you try to upgrade from SLS to just Lion, you will be prompted to buy Lion Server as well. So in the end, it's up to the Mac App Store e-mail to resolve this or perhaps I can attempt to do the clean install.
