Q: Unable to update bundled iMove/iPhoto/GarageBand?

I purchased a new Air yesterday.  Right out the box the App Store shows 3 updates available, one each for the bundled iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand.

When I go to update them via the App Store I get a dialog that "You must have previously purchased the item being updated.  Tap buy to purchase it now".

Of course if I try to do this it won't let me, I get another error "Purchase of this item is not currently available.  The item is being modified.  Please try again later".

The updates don't show in regular Software Update, and if I download the standalone updaters from Apple's support site the installer says they can't be installed and to use the App Store.

I seem to be going around in circles.  Has anyone any suggestions please?

Another update.  Email support have basically given up on me and have directed me to telephone support, which is closed right now.  I'll be ringing them tomorrow and will report back what they say. I have to say I'm not hopeful so far though.

I have the same issue on a brand new 11" MBA with Lion.

I emailed the app store support and they said they couldn't help me and to call applecare.  I called applecare and they seemed completely unaware of the issue.  The ended up connecting me with a supervisor who had me send in my computer info and they would send it to the engineers to figure out.  I also directed him to this discussion to show that it is not an isolated incident.

Same issue, no real assistance to add, I just hope that when apple looks at the discussion it's big enough to merit their attention.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a bigger problem here?  If it doesn't recognise that we have purchased iLife with the computer, isn't there a risk it won't allow us to update Lion when updates are released either (including, maybe, the update which fixes this problem)?

Just got off the phone to Applecare, spoke to someone who suggested the solution would be just to get the iTunes team to "associate" the iLife apps with my account.  Which seems to be common sense to me.

After that I spoke to a senior advisor, who asked me to send in screenshots of the App store showing the various error messages.  He then spoke to "the engineers" and told me that they are aware of the problem and are working on it.

There is hope for us yet

I was able to "fix" this issue by reformatting the harddrive and reinstalling lion.

Given that I just purchased a brand new macbook air with lion preinstalled, I wouldnt exactly accept that answer as a solution.  Surely Apple can fix this issue without an entire reinstall, especially since they installed it to begin with.

You're lucky gerads, others who have tried to fix the issue like this have ended up with no iLife AT ALL!

I was tempted to try the reinstall "fix" myself until I thought I might lose iLife completely.

I'm going to wait a few days and see if Apple manage to fix the problem from their end.

If you make a Time Machine backup of your Mac, then you cannot loose anything. Backups will be a very important step for folks to take if they intend to be part of Apple's future. I think Apple is taking the hard steps to force folks to do what they should have been doing all along. Even if it means alienating some and angering others. Those willing to learn the new survival skills will be Apple's future users.

You should have heard the rukus 10 years ago when Macs came out with no floppy drives, just an optical drive. This is the next step into the future of the electronic frontier.

Do you know I'd completely forgotten about my Time Machine backup!

Just waiting for my SSD to decrypt then I'm going to try a reinstall of Lion, I'll let you know whether this fixes the problem.

thanks for updating Alistair - please post any more info you get...

this is our first ever Macbook, so it's been disappointing to have a problem within half an hour of switching it on

sorry if this is a beginner's question, but is it safe to assume that there will be no problems with updating Lion? We wouldn't get the same message?

I'm assuming, maybe stupidly, that Lion will be updated via Software Update, but I guess we'll have to wait and see when 10.7.1 is released.  Which should be soon seeing as though developers are already testing 10.7.2.

Cantab01, do you have a Time Machine backup of your Air?

No, actually I've only just learned what Time Machine is!  I will prioritise making a backup asap in case I need to reinstall anything...
