Sleep and Wake problems under Lion

I installed Lion on a Early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1), 2x Quad-Core Xeon 2400 series @ 2.8GHz, 10GB RAM, 120GB OCZ Vertex2 SSD, GeForce 8800GT with dual 24" monitors setup.

I did a clean install of the OS from USB key.

I've run into the following problems so far :

- When putting the system into sleep, it now takes more than 20 seconds for the fans to stop and for the system to finally enter sleep mode.

It took at worse 5 seconds under Snow Leopard for the same action.

- If 'wake for ethernet network access' is checked under energy Saver, the mac will seem to wake from sleep when another computer requests access (AFP or SMB share)

but the graphics card fan will spin up to it's maximum rpm setting, creating a high-pitched noise, just like the first 5 seconds when cold-booting the system.

However, the system won't be available via the network until i press one of the keys on the keyboard (or click the mouse), just like if I woke the Mac manually by myself.

Pressing the key also makes the graphics card go back into normal rpm mode.

- If the screens are already into sleep state (activated via ctrl-shift-eject), you cannot put the Mac itself into sleep by pushing the power button.

Instead, the screens wake up and nothing happens, the mac won't go into sleep. However, the Mac goes into sleep from normal screen activity.

- When waking from sleep, i've got no network connectivity from Ethernet, although System Preferences shows the card as 'connected'.

I now have to restart the Mac to restore connectivity.

I have already reset the SMC and emptied the caches, but the symptoms are still here. Snow Leopard had none of these problems.

Does anyone have the same problems ? Could a firmware update possibly fix these annoyances ?

See my August post above -- notably, this problem had largely gone away, until the recent spate of iTunes, iOS, OSX updates. Now, I am gettin similar behavior:

When my iMac is woken from sleep by the AppleTV or the iOS Remote app, say, to play music, it will work... for a while. However, it will then stop responding -- the music will stop and the AppleTV and Remote app cannot get any info from it. The computer is awake, but you have to walk up to it and push a button. The screen lights-up and then everything is working again.

I have a 2008 Mac Pro as well. Probably, the LAST best-priced Mac Pro there was. Anyhow, that's for a different forum.

I refuse to upgrade to Lion because I don't like it, I like Spaces, and I don't feel like running into compatability issues with all my software.

Anyway, I think the sleep problem is a hardware one. My Mac Pro would not go to sleep after the set time, and would wake up arbitrarily.

To fix it I came across a piece of donationware called "Please Sleep". It monitors your Energy Saver preference pane and will sleep the Mac Pro if it does not go to sleep at the designated time (1.5 hours for me).

Good luck !!!!

1. My 2009 iMac 21.5 has just started misbehaving as above. I have left it to sleep overnight as per usual but now when it wakes there is no mouse / keyboard etc and it has to be restarted to get functionality back. Can we have a solution please?

2. Very odd but a whole load of apps appeared in a folder I had on the desktop. Apps like terminal.app, raid utility and many more.

I didnt know these apps were in this folder, which contained some pictures, until i put the folder into trash and tried to delete the folder. Then I got warnings about deleting apps. Now I cant get that folder OUT of trash.

I copied all the apps into the apps folder.

What caused this, where did all these 'system apps' come from? Any help appreciated.

I've found that if I leave the computer plugged in while the screen is closed, opening the clamshell will confuse the sleep-wake cycle and the computer will stay asleep. When this happens, removing the mag-safe adapter and replacing it will "reset" the cycle and the computer will wake up. I am guessing that this is a flaw somewhere, but born of a necessity related to docking or remote connection. Or maybe it's just a flaw.😕

I have a mid 2010 iMac with a fresh clean install of Lion 10.7.2 (installed today) on an external HDD.

I also have an older install of Lion on the iMac's internal HDD.

In both cases sleep functionality in both operating system installs does not function correctly.

In both OSs the sleep menu and the rear switch on the iMac put the Mac to sleep, but then it cannot be awoken from the Apple BT trackpad or keyboard, and worse still, the button on the rear of the iMac causes a cold restart.

This was never a problem with 10.6.

It's hard to believe that people are not screaming from the hilltops to get this fixed. Does it only affect a few Mac users?

Slightly different for me with Lion 10.7.2

When I come back to my sleeping iMac and move the mouse, the screen appears exactly as it was when I left it, but as I start to move the mouse about, I'm kind of rubbing out (like a pencil eraser) the screen with 1cm squares and underneath is the normal grey login screen. I have to rub out enough so that I can see my username, then click on it to get back in.

It's not right.

I have an early 2008 MBPro. I installed Lion around November 20th and initially there were no problems. That has changed. In the last 2 weeks it has not wanted to wake from sleep. A few days ago when taking it out of my carry bag it was extremely hot and would NOT wake from sleep. I did a hard shut down, took the battery out and then back in and it booted fine. Today, when trying to wake it up it turns on, but seems to boot into sleep mode. None of the keys are responsive. I tried booting into the Snow Leopard disk for disk utitlity, but it absolutely won't. Any suggestions? PLEASE???
