Just installed Lion and the same message comes up for me:

"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features. Open TM preferences to select a different backup disk."

I have a NAS - Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home Network Storage Device.

Worked fine with Snow Leopard (after some tweaking thanks to forum members)!

Alas now with Lion - a new problem ... (sigh... ;o(

Any suggestions anyone? Many many thanks ;o)

Just spoke with Apple Care Tech Support who stated:

"Seagate hasn't yet developed firmware to support use of Time Machine Backup to Seagate NAS in the new Mac OS X Lion. So it's suggested that Seagate users manually upload all important files and documents for now until firmware is made available for Mac Lion users."

I bought Time Capsule last week when I was having issues with Time Machine backing up to my Seagate NAS. I was about to return it as Seagate was finally working then Lion came along and killed that idea! I think I'll be unboxing Time Capsule shortly! Now I've just discovered my Java Plug-in has also disappeared! Grrr!

I have the same problem here with a QNAP NAS - and I don't understand why Apple wasn't able to release Lion after this problem was fixed by the different hardware suppliers. There is no NAS producing company which has a working solution for this mess at the moment...

Apple stuff - please read this: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/mac-os-x/os-x-lion-the-network-backup-disk-does- not-support-the-required-afp-features/

and please fix this soon.

After the Final Cut Pro X mess, now we have the OS X Lion mess... what next?

I'm not sure if this is totally true... in the past most of the updates / upgrades had been very smooth, but since some time (maybe this depends on Steve's presence) it's getting worse...

Maybe all these hardware manufacturers weren't sure, whether this is the latest version or not... obviously there must be some kind of miscommunication!

Apple delivers the software, others deliver additional hardware... and it's a must that they have to work together.

Yes, that's the point exactly. They should, and some do, but others don't.

The first beta released to the "Appleseed" program was in February; Developers may have had earlier ones.

Those NASs did not work then, or on any subsequent betas.

The same thing happend from Leopard to Snow Leopard; some hardware and software vendors didn't have updates ready on release day, some did so within a few weeks, some never did.

Apple dropped support for older, less secure authentication protocols. There may be licensing issues for vendors to upgrade to the newer authentication protocols - or it may just be a question of getting around to implementing them.

If you are just using Time Machine and Lion at home, you can re-enable the older, less secure authentication methods to restore functionality with your NAS:

I had the same problem and spent almost a day to try to get it going. Found the answer at http://www.agit8.org/2011/09/12/getting-the-goflex-home-to-play-nice-with-os-x-l ion/ and it works. Also I paste the text explaining it:

-------------------------------------

To add to this I had to diconnect the GoFLex Home and connect again as: new new user. Then I was able to use that account in the Time Machine. Hope this works as well with you and others with this problem.

Recently I acquired a Macbook Air Mid 2011 model and I wanted to find a good backup regime. Since OS X has had a great backup software called Time Machine, which has been around since OS X 10.5 Leopard, I thought buying a Time Capsule would be the way to go. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, I found that a 1TB Time Capsule costs more than $300.

I went for a cheaper option and acquired the Seagate GoFlex Home 2TB drive for $100 less than the time capsule. When I took it home, though, the Time Machine could see the drive in the network, but did not want to backup to it, complaining about “The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features”. After persevering for a while, I went to search Google and found out in the Seagate forums that there was a firmware update for the drive, which I promptly downloaded through Preferences > Administration > Software Updates.

When the update was finished, I restarted the drive. I checked on the software version and I got version 2.5.3:2.0.0.367:1.2.331. Then I went to create a new user through Preferences > Administration > Add User. As per the advice in the Seagate forum, I made sure that the user was not an admin user (do not click on the “Create As Administrator” checkbox in the GoFlex interface). I also ticked the Enable Computers Backup feature under Preferences > Administration > Computers Backup. I entered a password and then I restarted my MacBook Air and fired up Time Machine and Voila!

Time Machine is now working to backup my MacBook Air and it went on for 5 hours (my wifi is still on g, not n). I hope that someone will find this useful as I was getting a few gray hairs trying to make this work. I am not saying that this will work for everyone, but I hope it could be a starting point towards a solution.
