Since installing Lion, my CanoScan Lide 20 is not usable - Canoscan Toolbox software no longer opens; downloaded latest drivers and when trying to install, get error message that PowerPC applications no longer supported. Anybody know of a workaround?

Under supported devices it lists your Canon. I cannot try myself, because at my last visit at my pals house LION was not yet here...

Thanks for the suggestion Archie - I came across a previous post from somebody after I'd sent mine, who mentioned VueScan from www.hamrick.com/ and I've decided to go down that track - seems quite good, though not perfect!

I have the same problem with my LIDE-35. There's no driver package for Lion. Vuescan did not work with it - no scanner was recognised. Even on SL, I had to install Canon's driver before Vuescan worked with it. Vuescan, however, works fine with my old Nikon slide scanner without any driver installation, though. I guess Vuescan has no built in driver support for the LIDE scanners.
CanoScan Toolbox is obsolete. U need to find something called MP Navigator EX. That works here with canon scanners.
Interesting ... VueScan worked with my CanoScan Lide 20 straight off - just plugged it in after I'd installed VueScan and started scanning without a hitch. I'm still learning its settings but happy to have my scanner back after thinking I'd have to get a new one!

Which version of vuescan are you on? I have 9.0.45. Tried it multiple times on different macs with the LIDE-35 and it just didn't work without the Canon driver installed. Maybe Hamrick supports some older scanners but not all?

I just checked vuescan's release notes. Your LIDE-20 will work with Vuescan without any Canon drivers. Unfortunately my LIDE-35 won't. See here:
But if you have a look at this info re Vuescan and the LiDE 35, Ed says that it will work on Lion providing the scanner driver is installed first. So have you tried installing the v7.7.2.1 scanner driver for 10.6 on Lion?
Other posts have probably made this redundant now, but I'm using Vuescan 9.0.51. I had a look at the link to the LiDE 35 info and it certainly seems to indicate that if you install the Canon driver first you should be able to use VueScan.
vuescan worked for me and my LIDE-20. Yay! Reduce/reuse and all that.
I have also got my parents' scanner working with Vuescan but does anyone know if there is a free piece of software I could use as $39.95 seems quite expensive (probably more than a new printer)?
Edited to say I only used Vuescan once to check it works.
If you want a free solution, often the "CanoScan Toolbox" provided on the same page as the LiDe 35 drivers on the canon website works.
On my machine (with a LiDe 50), the "free" scanning program provided with Lion also works.

Vuescan works with Lion OS 10.7.2 and Canon Lide 20 scanner.
I learned about it here and decided that I had already wasted an hour
trying to get the scanner to work so I should try a paid solution.
The software is also a pleasure to use compared to, the Canoscan toolbox
which I used with OS 10.6.8. It was easy to install and it worked immediately.
Much cheaper than a new scanner and will probably be nice to use
when I do eventually get a new scanner.
It seems to be in a special class of reliable and robust software.
So, based on what I know so far I strongly recommend it.
