Install Snow Leopard in a Lion partition

I had trouble installing SL on my MacPro with Lion even though it's on a separate drive. Finally got it installed, and everything was working pretty well, with the occasional permissions glitch. In trying to fix it, I'm now locked out of my other 3 hard drives and stuck with access to only the SL drive, core apps only. All my files are on the other drives, and even though I'm the administrator the $^*(%#*) thing will not allow me to access the other drives. Disk Utility is useless since it works differently now with Lion. This **** thing is now schizophrenic. I'm not allowed to reboot on any drive but the SL drive. I'm ready to dump Apple into the river. Lion was fun at first, but the glitchy nature made me want to return to SL. Now I'm screwed. Anybody have any suggestions. Does Applecare cover this kind of abortion?

"You're Microsofting me to death, here!" God, I'm glad to hear somebody else say that. I've never had this kind of rage against Apple I usually have reserved for MS. I do now, and I'm not sure I'll ever buy another Apple product. If their future is taking the track that sent me into the MS booby hatch, I'll go back to my abacus. Are you listening, Apple? Move the tip of your pinky if you hear any of this. I thought Lion's weirdness was just me and getting used to a foreign system. It does have Vistaesque qualities. Give me SL or give me death.

Let's see if I can make this short and simple; maybe someone has an answer. I'm only able to boot from my SL hard drive (MacPro), and when I try to access any other drives, even external backups, I'm told I don't have permission even though I'm signed in as admin. I'm unable to verify or repair disk permission on any drive except SL. From what I've read, Lion uses a different procedure in its Disk Utility, so SL's disk utility appears to be limited with the other disks? SL TM won't recognize the disk I backed up Lion with. This is looking like tissue rejection. I must have done something along the way with sharing & permissions since the fields are grayed out and privilege is custom. I can briefly change it but it always returns to custom. At this point my backups appear to be worthless. Any help will be appreciated. Glad I still have my old iMac with most of my irreplaceable photos and videos still there. btw, my MacPro boots and shuts down way faster with SL than it did with Lion. It feels like an SSD even with the tired old Hitachi hard drive running SL. Lion is on a 1TB Samsung which runs about twice as fast as the Hitachi.

Glad you had some success after all your hard work. As for me, I've thrown in the towel and can wait no longer for a solution. With a new MBA with thunderbolt, no firewire/thunderbolt adapter within reach, I've given up. I deleted the partition I set up, and have instead opted to buy Windows software and Parallels so that I can finally use the program that is not Lion-compatible on my Lion-born machine. Had I known all this going into it, I would have opted for an older MBA with Snowleopard and avoided Lion entirely.

I just purchased a new MBP Oct 11, 2.5GH i7 17" and was pleased with the speed and stability of Lion.

With that said, this is where the love fest ends with Apple. I'm not new to Apple, I've owned a Mac since 1985 and they all still run with their OEM equipment. So as you can see I know Macs. This upgrade was a major step in getting my studio up to date. I'm a multimedia designer/software developer so I'm very familiar on the software side as well. I've got a line of dual MDD's set up as a render farm, and my old laptop was a TiBook with all of them running Leopard all of which I've been extremely satisfied over the many years.

This has been the worst experience that I've ever had with Apple. I Have a $3000 paperweight. 😠

I tout Apple at every chance I get over MS PC's, but now I too am having second thoughts after the way I've been treated via online support and at the Apple store with no help or solution. I'm really having a hard time justifying paying premium dollars for a system that no longer gives the support we are accustom to.

I've tried most of the solutions with the exception of using another Mac running SL to get SL partition on this MBP and nothing worked. Even purchased SL right after purchasing the MBP and should have purchased the SL Server to run it off VMware if they would have told me to do so.

I have thousands of dollars of software and plug-ins that are useless to me right now cause Rosetta is no longer supported. I can't run my Final cut Pro 2 or Logic Studio 8. How about you Apple give me the latest software at a steep discount?

At least when we went from OS 9 to OSX we had an out with emulation support. As you can see from reading this Apple, there are a lot of ****** off users in which you are not helping any of us. You've had plenty of time with Lion to get us the help we need. And with Mountain Lion out this summer, I see no help form you what so ever from Apple.

I now have a dilemma, should I even consider purchasing any new desktops or just go with used ones that will accept SL and portioned Lion/Mountain Lion.?

This whole deal has cost me so much time and effort researching ways to get things working properly that I now have to question Apples worth to my business.

This has been an extremely satisfying rant. 😀

When I bought my new MacBook Pro, with Lion installed, I knew what I was getting into - that I'd have to leave a lot of old software behind because Lion wouldn't have a Rosetta engine to run 'legacy' software. As a Mac user, I'm sure that you knew what you were getting into. I tend to keep up with software updates but some I just can't afford. So I lost some. But I gained a great deal of speed from upgrading from my 'original,' early 2006 MBP. I really can't understand why you're so upset... you did know that you were upgrading to an OS that wouldn't run PPC software, didn't you?

Still, I understand that it feels good to get something off your chest and now you have.

I knew that Rosetta was the end of the line for the PPC software, but I did not realize that you could not run SL on a seperate partion or external HD so I could do a gradual transition over to all new software. I don't have an extra $5K+ to spend on software right now. 😉

I know what you mean about not being able to afford software! I had to leave a lot of software 'behind' when I bought my MacBook Pro...

My sympathy is with you on that one!

I initially had the same trouble. My new-to-me 2009 Mac Pro came with Lion installed, and I used it for a while, getting more confused with the different ways to access functions and its overa

ll glitchiness. So I tried to install SL on a separate internal HD, and it wouldn't let me do it. I don't know what I did differently, but on the third attempt it did install, and I can boot from either and access files on any drive now (after I was locked out for a week and finally used a suggestion here). I'm going back to SL for its simplicity and speed (yes, right now it's a good bit faster than Lion both in boot, use and shutdown). I'll keep the original Lion configuration alive on an external just in case Apple makes like impossible with its older OS. Wish I knew what I did that finally succeeded in letting the two coexist. Thanks for the help here.

I've fixed a lot of permissions issues with Permissions Reset from Ohanaware. It's freeware.

It seems like every OS upgrade means problems with permissions. I lost access to one of my two boot drives. It took repeated fixing with Permissions Reset before things finally settled down.

I have a question, I already installed SL in my macbook pro with Lion, when I'm going to start with the SL partiton it doesn't start, just keep showing the grey apple and doesn't load the SL, how can I fix it?? please help I need snow leopard to run pro tools 9 in my macbook!

I think this is the right thread to ask this question on. Like many people on this thread, I am trying to install Snow Leopard onto a partition (well more like on an external harddrive).

My midi controller company stopped supporting the driver after Snow Leopard, so in order for me to use it, I need to be running Snow Leopard on my 09 Macbook Pro.

I was wondering for those of you who installed Snow Leopard if you had issues with performance running it off of an external harddrive? I am looking to purchase a portable one. If so, any spec recommendations? Thanks in advanced!

I have a question, when my macbook is loading the snow leopard partition, it just freezes, I can only see grey apple without the signal that is loading the snow leopard "I mean the circle below the apple" and it take a long time but never start, I Have de 10.7.3 lion version and I started the snow leopard form other computer with the firewire cable and it works, what can I do please I need help!
