Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.

I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.

I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.

This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.

I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.

I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:

I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.

I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.

Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!

So it doesn't seem to be just me.

Anyone else?

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem that you describe. In some cases incoming mail appears in the inbox for a few seconds, but then dissappears and I'm unable to find it anywhere.

Aretwo,

I'm having the exact same problem as you and others viewing this thread.

I moved up to a senior AppleCare representative last week, and after we couldn't figure it out, we did a Data Capture so that it could be submitted to an Apple Engineer for detailed analysis. I haven't heard back yet, but when I do, I intend to post the results.

I'm curious -- did you get a chance to try your e-mail account on another computer? How did that work out?

Nov 27, 2011 11:02 AM in response to Temby

I set up an identical mail account on a loaned computer running Snow Leopard (SL). The results were inconsistant. Day one, all emails appeared in SL, none in Lion. I was sure the problem was with Lion. Day 2, no new email in either. Then one appeared in Lion, then vanished, only to be replaced by all, which then vanished. Still nothing in SL. Interestingly, each day, all emails that had been missing the prior day appear on the following day.

I had already deleted all preferences and reinstalled Mail on th eLion computer. The only remaining solution Apple could suggest was to reinstall Lion. Rather than do this, I called GoDaddy again. This time, they discovered an issue with my account being "out of sync". After the tech fixed the problem and I was able to see my emails, I kept him on the phone long enough for all of that day's messages to vanish again before my eyes. Then he performed a second, more comprehensive type of sync. That was yesterday afternoon and I am monitoring my account. So far, so good. All throughout, I had no trouble receiving mail on my iPhone, Gmail or webmail.

I noted that the numbers reflecting the quantity of messages in my Inbox, and the number unread, were inconsistent from computer to computer and as compared with GoDaddy webmail. Also, I watched the activity window as I got new messages and noted that it got hung up in a folder I had created. I deleted the folder. This "hang up" only happened in SL and not Lion. I've been in slash and burn mode, trying to eliminate any file or folder that might be corrupt. I explained to the tech that if this last sync did not work, I would be moving my account from GoDaddy. We will see.

You might try this temporary work around: Since my email account in question was being routed to Gmail and looked good there, I created an Apple Mail account in Lion to capture emails from myname@Gmail.com account. Understand, the Gmail account setup in AppleMail did not in any way reference the GoDaddy account. Gmail was only acting as an intermediary POP3 account. I was able to successfully route mail from GoDaddy to Gmail into Apple Mail without issue, other than the fact that I have no control over how frequently Gmail checks the GoDaddy server.

I spoke to 5 different Apple Senior techs. I hope this report is helpful in some way. I will post again if I start losing email, otherwise assume that my issue was with being out of sync at GoDaddy.

Tonight or tomorrow I will try setting up an email account on GoDaddy. I maintain a website on GoDaddy, and am eligible to create an email account.

I know that GoDaddy was once problematic, even before Snow Leopard, but I thought having not heard about it lately that it had been fixed.

Such inconsistent behavior certainly points to something unique about interfacing with GoDaddy, but the problem may be in Mail as well.

My IMAP accounts, including some with Dreamhost for private Domains have worked OK.

Not sure how soon I can both set up a GoDaddy account, or more importantly generate a useful sample of activity. In the meantime I remembered the source of similar issue from the past, concerning their implimentation of the IDLE Command. See:

It's been 4 days since my last post and all had been working well - until today. GoDaddy had "fixed" the synching problem and I unchecked the IDLE Command per Ernie's suggestion. I've received 8 emails this morning, visible everywhere but on Apple Mail. I will call GoDaddy one more time and then I'm done.

Would anyone care to recommend an alternate host for my domain name? I do not maintain a website so the switch should be easy. I would just be moving my email account.

That's depressing. Just 2 days ago I received a call from the Senior AppleCare advisor that was helping me with my case and he informed me that the engineering department had recommended that I contact Go Daddy about the issue, and that the problem would be an issue on the Go Daddy end.

In the meantime, I had installed Mozilla's Thunderbird on my machine as well, and it receives all e-mails just fine. I asked the Senior AppleCare gentleman why it would be a Go Daddy issue if the account worked under Thunderbird on my machine, but he unfortunately did not have an answer.

I was planning on contacting Go Daddy until I saw your e-mail just now. I may just switch to another e-mail program. My gut still tells me it's an Apple Mail issue, but I'm very open to other's opinions on the matter.

Thanks for the update!

The problem may well be limited to Apple Mail not meshing well with GoDaddy, but the problem clearly then results on the server side from what is being described for GoDaddy accounts. The IDLE Command issue is one such function that requires back and forth communication with the server. Thunderbird might do those kinds of things with slightly different command protocols.

I will still try to devise a useful test with a GoDaddy account, but I have to review how to create the account -- I only maintain a website on GoDaddy, and not the full account, but I know the owner of the account does not use the email feature with it, so I am free to try something.

Thanks, Ernie -- I'll still call GoDaddy and see if I can't resolve this issue. I'll also go through the rest of our company (we have about 70 people that use Apple Mail / Lion / GoDaddy / IMAP account setups), and see if anyone else has this issue. I think I'm the only one with the problem, as no one else has brought it to my attention yet.

Ernie, Could I volunteer my domain to the cause? I believe that I am entitled to additional email addresses at my domain. If this is of interest, would you suggest how to best communicate offline?

It should be noted that I have 2 domain names with GoDaddy. My primary domain is the one having the trouble. The other is used infrequently, had identical settings to the first (until I turned off IDLE) and has not had any difficulties. This point alone makes this entire situation bizarre.

Dec 1, 2011 7:31 AM in response to aretwo

Thanks for this offer. If you click on my name to the left, and look in the Bio line of the resulting Profile, you will find an email address for me.

Please remind me in any email, or here, about the involvement of other computers or devices, and whether that is a difference between the utilization of the second account on the second domain?

I have the same or similar problem using Lion/Mail. I thought I was going crazy when I couldn't find an important email I sent yesterday. And then I tried to find another set of emails from a different conversation and they were gone too. Meanwhile, everything is as it should be on my imap webmail server. I have tried rebuilding and synchronizing with no success. It seems to be a random occurrence with no rhyme or reason. Please post a fix back here when available.
