How can I select apps in Launchpad using only the keyboard? Adding another app launcher seems like a waste if I can't efficiently use it with the keyboard. This is not an improvement/replacement for app launchers like Quicksilver, Alfred, Chuck unless keyboard navigation is supported.

So far I don't think this is possible. Ditch launchpad and just create a folder of aliases to the apps you want to use. It'll do the same thing but work much better than launchpad.
Disappointing that Apple crippled this shiny new feature, but it appears they have.
Lauchpad comes from iOS...it would be a bit cumbersome there to bring up the keyboard to select an app. But expect voice-activated phone dialing and touchscreen iMacs soon.
Just because a feature comes from iOS doesn't mean that it has to be identical to the iOS version. Apple acknowledges that there are physical differences between the platform. You do not have to "bring up" the keyboard on Lion, it is already there and it would not be at all cumbersome to allow people to use it.
I think the idea is click in the app you want and launch just that and it works.
They say the way to do touch in imac is trackpad because touch the scree is no ergonomic right and after long time is bad so the way we(Apple) are go a do gestures in imac is with the trackpad....Apple words ..You can see the video
i mean you don't need app launchers you don't need download and use them just click the app you want launch and use it and if is a apple app better or if is from the app store fine because apple check them others that you trying may no from app store.May in the future that change but for now is how it its...Hope you understand that,you can use Xcode and do your own app and submit it to app store if people like your idea then apple like ...
Anyway..
Best option I found is to drag the applications folder to the dock, when clicked it almost works like launchpad, except you can start typing the name of the app to highlight it, enter to open. Also arrow keys actually do something, unlike in launchpad.
Also disappointed in the launchpad feature. The simple addition of keyboard navigation would make it much more useful. After all, there is a key on the keyboard just to open it, but after that, you can only switch screens.
Use Spotlight.
- Command + Space to bring up Spotlight
- Type name of the app and hit enter
