Lion Killed my Snapz Pro X DVD Screen capture software

I can't figure this out. I've been using Snapz Pro X for capturing DVD screenshots in the past but since upgrading to Lion and also upgrading the Snapz Pro X software to 2.3.1 for Lion compatibility I've noticed that I can no longer do DVD movie screen captures. Just a blank checkerboard.

Is anyone here who happens to be using Snapz Pro X running into the same problems I'm having making DVD screen captures on Lion? I've already contacted Ambrosia and hopefully I will get an answer soon.

Lion is no longer supporting universal applications like Final Draft 7 which was designed on the PPC platform. Snapz Pro X works but it doesn't work with DVDs that are from a major studio or even from DVDs that I produce myself (not to say I would capture my own content from DVD Player). VLC works hit and miss sometimes, wish there was more support for it.

I am having the same problem. I used to use Snapz heavily for taking brief screen captures for personal use. I see that Ambrosia has an FAQ saying that Lion breaks the ability to take captures from DVD's or other "protected" media. So can you folks explain how VLC makes things any different? (Do you mean PLAYING the video with VLC and then Snapz can capture it?) This makes little sense to me because I thought the whole idea was that Snapz is just capturing the screen pixels. Guess not, huh? I am also mystified why Lion would want to get involved in digital rights issues on any level. Any specific suggestions on how to capture video would be much appreciated.

Jerry,

I'm not to sure how it works but it works. I am also considering using Mac the Ripper to see if doing that may help to actually capture it.

VLC works pretty much like DVD Player BUT it does have some glitches. You can from QuickTime use a whole screen capture you'll just have to go back about 5 secs. from the stuff you want to capture so you don't get a floating menu, play button, etc. Hope this makes sense, it's the only work around until AMBROSE finds an alternative or go back to Snow Leopard.

Cheers!

I am not understanding these messages! VLC will play the videos just like QuickTime Player, but the issue is not playing them, but capturing the video off the screen (i.e., ripping the vid). Snapz is a screen capture utility. Can VLC CAPTURE screen video? I've used it as a player but did not know it could capture.

Note that Handbrake (so far) will still rip entire DVD's in Lion. So if you want to capture either a "Chapter" or a whole vid, Handbrake will work fine. But Handbrake's user interface is arduous at best and many vids are not broken into convenient "chapters." Waiting an hour to rip and entire DVD movie is pretty tough if all you need is 15 seconds of it.

Concerning using SnapZPro for copying stills (eg., from docs, still images, etc. on or open on the Desktop), the current version (2.3.2) does not work in Lion. For example, it will do nothing when you try to paste a SnapZ snapshot into Word 2011. (Ditto for pasting into Photoshop CS3 which is now regarded as legacyware!) Ambrosia know this and advise reverting to v. 2.3.1 which is available somewhere on their site (although I had to hunt for it).

Hold on a minute, SteveKir. I'm using Snapz 2.3.2 on my MacBook Pro with Lion and it is working just fine. It takes still shots that open properly when double clicked and that paste properly into Word (2011).Moreover, my version of Snapz works fine capturing videos from websites or videos I've previously recorded in QuickTime. It's only "protected media" (like DVD's of movies...) that don't work for me. So it sounds as if there are some configuration issues at play here. These matters can get quite complicated as you know.

Thanks to Drewski for the directions on using VLC. The important piece of info there is that it's apparently DVD Player that creates the problem for Snapz. I guess that DVD Player has a "hook" to Lion that neither VLC nor Handbrake seem to share. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it.

And I hope the assembled folks at Ambrosia can get around this somehow. I don't see how Big Brother has any business mucking around with what I capture on my computer screen.

It definitely does not work on my Lion 7.2, iMac (mid 2011). Seems like another characteristic of Lion.

The widget Screenshot Plus is good.
