Problems with SMB and file sharing in Lion

I have an HP OfficeJet 8500 Premier that is only 2 years old. One of the things I loved about it was the ability to scan documents to a folder on my Mac. Unfortunately, the only filesharing HP supports is SMB. In SnowLeopard, SMB worked great (as long as SMB was set up in "Sharing").

Now, however, I cannot connect my HP printer/scanner to my Mac via SMB. I have rebooted my Mac, rebooted my printer, turned on then off the SMB sharing, tried to re-setup the scan-to folder on my printer...all to no avail.

One other oddity--when I try to turn off my SMB account (my login account) in sharing, it won't let me. It asks for a password then unchecks the account briefly, then re-checks the account (leaving it on). I have the opposite problem on my MBP--when I try to turn on SMB sharing and select the account, it asks for a password and briefly checks the account box, then un-checks it.

Anyone have any solutions for getting an HP printer/scanner to Scan-to a Mac running 10.7?

Thanks,

T.

Lion Server does still have an FTP server but it is hidden from the GUI.

You can turn it on by typing the following in Terminal:

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

If you want to enable the FTP server via GUI, try out the "Lion Tweaks" app at http://ifredrik.com/applications/

This is what I did for my "SMB to FTP workaround" for a Xerox 6180 printer/scanner:

Richard you are a frigging GENIUS. Seriously.

If you have a private network as I do then setting this up couldn't be simpler.

My steps:

-- turn on FTP server with LION TWEAKS

-- create a folder in my home directory named "Scans"

-- go to my office printer and setup an address using FTP.

Filled in

HOST NAME: FTP address (no Windows slashes or anything, just the address)

FOLDER PATH: Scans

USER: myHomeName

PASSWORD: myPassword

And it just worked. Thank you so much

Having some trouble with above.

I already have a folder on the desktop "VCC_Scans"

Turned on FTP with "Liion tweaks".

Used Safari to go to the printer by entering the address of the printer. Then entered the details of the folder, port 21, my screen name, my OS X password.

Then I try to scan but it hangs.

Perhaps I've set it up wrong. Any ideas?
