Q: Problems with SMB and file sharing in Lion

Having some trouble with above.

I already have a folder on the desktop "VCC_Scans"

Turned on FTP with "Liion tweaks".

Used Safari to go to the printer by entering the address of the printer.  Then entered the details of the folder, port 21, my screen name, my OS X password.

Then I try to scan but it hangs.

Perhaps I've set it up wrong.  Any ideas?

you have to set your printer to scan and send ftp.  you have to set the mac to accept the ftp, but your printer has to support the ftp scan for it to work.

I did set the default scan to FTP and enabled ftp in the network section of admin menu.

Is there a setting missing?

you'll have to input your password somewhere on the printer to authenticate.  look around in the ftp settings

you might try mimicking what I did.

Make sure your name is the same name and password you log into your computer with (and maybe short name? johndoe rather than John Doe?). In any event for the simple method I used it has to match your login which I guess means has to match the name of your user folder exactly.

maybe create a folder in your home folder named Scans like I did (ie inside the johndoe users folder)

then in your printer ftp setting just put the name Scans without any path

See if that works. That's all I had to do. I didn't have to set a port number on my printer but looks like 21 worked for someone else so if you require one use that.

I did have some trouble until I used a simpler path name. Rather than trying to figure it all out I just put an alias to that Scans folder on my desktop.

Tried all that but no joy.  I did not find a place to enter the password on the printer panel, but did via a browser window through the network.

I'll keep trying.

I got it.

Had the wrong address for scan folder!  Assumed it was another setting.

I found a solution. From my Ricoh Aficio MPC3001 printer I setup SMB info including 'authentication' info Lion username and password for the account.

Make sure that Lion account has SMB enabled. I was able to test the connection to the share on the Lion machine. Still struggling to actually upload the scanned file there..

In the interim, I enabled FTP and used that solution. That works everytime..

10.7.3 doesn't fix it.

10.7.3 didn't solve any scan to network folder for me. neither client or server. anyone else?

I've bitten the bullet and Installed a Samba 3 file server in place of Apple's solution.

The fully Automated installer (and completely reversible) is called SMBUp and available here:

smbup installs fine but I can't start the service. I'm on 10.7.3

Hi there, I hope I am not posting on the wrong thread but I'm at a loss here.

We just bought a Xerox Phaser 8860 MFP for our office. After countless hours trying to get the network scan going, I am still at the starting line.

I tried to configure all this from my 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running 10.7.2, then 10.7.3. We have an Ethernet network, with an HP ProCurve Switch 1400-24 G, connected to the internet though a ZyXEL P660HW-D1 router. I access the network through a TimeCapsule connected by Ethernet to my iMac and to the switch (the TimeCapsule creates a Wireless network too but I guess that's beside the point). The Phaser 8860 is connected to the switch.

I can scan to the printer folder and view and download the scan from the web application of the printer (available by entering the Phaser 8860's IP in a web browser). But apparently the only way Xerox allows to create network folders is through the Xerox Scan Utility (that's the only way I have found, at any rate), and I am absolutely ignorant as to other ways of doing this.

Of course, the mentioned utility doesn't work. It opens alright, but none of the scanned files stored in the 8860 hard drive appear in any of the tabs (copy to folder, scan to email, etc.). Apparently, the file sharing SMB option must be activated (and it is), and that's how I ended up in this thread - I thought that might be the problem.

The funny thing is I tried with a Windows 7 Professional partition in my MBP, installed all the drivers, and the same Xerox Scan Utility... to no avail. The same exact problem as with my iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I can access the 8860, I can see all the options under whatever extremely annoying controllers Windows offers (sorry, I've been a Mac user since I was 6), apparently the TWAIN controller is all set and good to go... But the scan utility still sees no files in the Phaser (or rather doesn't seem to be able to connect to the Phaser).

I tried using SMBUp as wrxtasysuggested, and still no go.

Can anybody offer some thoughts on this?
